Hi all,
I have a 2003 Manual Jackaroo that developed a whine in 5th gear at approx 20,000 k's. I have had the vehicle back to the dealer and they have fitted an insulation kit on top of the gearbox. They are saying the whine that remains is normal for this type of vehicle. The whine to me is not acceptable and I would like to know If anyone has any experience with this?
I would be pleased for any info.
Regards John.

Hi John, I have a 99 TD Jack and was alerted to the whine by a post on this forum,
I wasn't aware of it until I read about it. Sure enough the whine was there but I don't even notice it now.
Then again it all depends on how loud is loud.
Fro what I remember there was a fix for it, but I cann't recall what it was, maybe some one else can post a better response.

Hi John,

This is a common thing in that gearbox. It is because 5th gear is cut straight and is typically whiney as a result. It does not affect the operation of the gearbox in any otherway. If you search the archives you will find this issue is posted a number of times.

The insulation kit is the standard workaround and it works to varying degrees. You can however insist that the 5th gear be replaced under warranty. If you have no joy with the dealer, you can take it up with Holden Customer Service and they will follow it up for you.

John,

I have 98 3.0TD and it has whined since approx 20,000km. I regularly tow long distances in 5th gear, up & down hills and apart from the whine, I've had no problems with approx 160,000km on the clock.

However, a mate of mine had a 98 petrol and the dealer replaced his gearbox not long after he bought it. So it comes down to exactly what the whine is. I would seek a 2nd opinion.

My 99 Jack whined from the start but has reduced - now up to 92k on the clock and its still there just, but when I get up to a speed of about 90 kph + its seems to be gone (less load on the teeth I guess). As Sav said, its just a design thing by the look of it. Mind you, with a load on for a trip, 5th needs to be given an easy life !

Yep, there is a small fault with some of the post 98 update boxes in the end float clearance on 5th gear, Holden were re-building some of the boxes under warranty with new gears and shims, but the fix is not always sucessful and most boxes have the whine to varying degrees, and the common 'fix' now is to fit some sound deadening pads under the floor above the box, No strength issue at all , just annoying. My fix ? - fit decent quality deadening under the floor and even lift the console and carpet and fit deadening there as well. Sorry champ the noise is 'normal' unfortuanetely, But the good news is that the 5th gear won't drop off the end of the shaft as it does in the nissan boxes !!!

Yep agree with Bradley , My 99 TD developed the whine at about 30 K after I had changed the gear oil to I think 75/ 85 as per book .Anyhow my theory is that the 5th gear thrust washer starves for lubrication due to thicker oil and wears and/or staying in 5th gear below 80 clicks as diesel are harsher on boxes than petrol . The result is that the 5th gear then touches the case as the thrust washer wears and that creates the whine , evidents of this was in the oil , first signs of bronze then alloy , this has now stopped as it has worn in to the new position and the whine is virtually gone .
I now run a fully synthetic 75 weight oil and the gearbox feels great and is quiet.

This was the exact response i recieved from bunbury holden,They removed the box and fitted the kit .After fitting a slight noise at 80 kph gone at 90kph .They assued me that they are a good gear box that give little trouble and have done 50k since .
The insulation remody not sure about ,but sounds the easy way out of annoying noise ,and if you are like me ,i hate noises like that.

Simple solution - fit a set of muddies and the whine will disappear!

Seriously though, I reckon I've just started getting a whine in 4th gear at 60 km.h - the faster I go the higher the whine gets. Performance, economy etc still the same so I will just leave it for now.

Cheers
