Hey All
Great
forum guys!!!
Anybody know where to get a good price on a HF.
Also wondering if there is a basic model available as most people would only use 1/8 of the capabilities of these things!!!
cheers

G'day GeroBoof,
Not familiar with the rrp of HF radios, have you looked in the Trader section of this site? there's a couple there for sale.

Older basic models regularly appear on ebay.

but don't purchase an old crystal locked model with useless frequencies. It can cost you more than what it's worth to get the crystals cut, installed and the radio aligned.

It depends on how much you are willing to spend and if you require selcall and/or the ability to make telephone calls. I'm no expert on these particular radios but the Codan are most popular followed by Barrett. There is quite an active Codan yahoo group for the good oil.

Have a look at the market page at www.vks737.on.netQuite a few used units there, plus plenty of info on HF usage overall. Most HF resellers have used units on the shelf. If you don't want all the 'bells and whistles' I'd suggest getting something after the crystal generation, with selcall capability at least - comes in very handy.

Mate I recall reading something on this site not too long ago about some change in the telecom industry that may make HF obsolete. Not sure on the details as I don't have a HF but I thought you may be interested before forking out for something that may soon be of bugger all use. Try doing a search on HF on this site and you should be able to find it. Sorry I can't be more specific.

My two cents worth....
Globalstar have combined CDMA/Sat phones, for about $1000 to $2000 dollars. The call prices are suprisingly low, even on Sat, and you will nearly always get a good signal from Sat, whereas HF can be a bit tricky if the atmosphere is not on your side.

p.s. CDMA/Sat phone is also transportable, so if you leave your car and go bushwalking or the like in a remote area, then you just pop it in your pocket. saves having to run a few
miles back to the car to use the HF when there is a western tipan wrapped around your leg.
