what is the closest size in metric to - 5.5F 16split rims with 7.50R16 8PR tyres? This is from a DX patrol. What tyre size will the 15 mm allowable increase take me to? can you squeeze a 285/75 R16 legally in its place? (what about 265/80. that should fit. do they exist?)

Hi
These are a 32 inch tyre, you will fit a 285 with a new 16x8 rim, and they are 33 inch diameter, there is another nice size called 255x85x16 at 33 and a bit, not too wide, fits perfect on a 7 inch rim.
If you can fit them legally, and were wanting something cheaper, BFG sell 33x10rx15, 32x11rx15 tyres. Depending on what model Patrol, they came out with 15's as an option or std.

thanks muchly. the 255x85x16 sounds good. whats the reason people are choosing much fatter rubber though. I am finding narrower tyres are more
puncture resistant and can bite harder. I this why all mining folk etc use them on their vehicles?

Bjorn, If you do a search you will discover that the "fat vs Skinney" tyre thing has been done a million times. At the end of the day it appears that people have their preferred option of tyres and just run with it. There are plus and minus for both skinney and fats.
Willem has just changed from tube tyres to tubeless and would be a good one to get a view from.

Mark
