great central road

we wish to travel laverton to alice, march 2003 and would like some comments or feedback regarding this trip, basically where do i start.
we dont wish to fly, we would like to see some of the outback.
would my subaru awd wagon be a sufficient vehicle.
any help would be great

Stephen..the road up to Alice is fine nowadays. You will see a bit of outback from the road. I think any well maintained vehicle will do the trip ok. Always carry plenty of water (NO MATTER WHAT). Stay with the main roads, and do some research before you leave, maps, road conditions, distance between refueling depots etc. But most of all do it!! I feel you will have no trouble....I did that road when it was dirt, more or less from just outside Adelade to not far out of Alice. The only time I have actually got out of a car and kissed the bitumen. :)

It's a straightforward trip on pretty good dirt roads, but check conditions just before you go as rain can make a big difference. As mentioned above carry plenty of water, also fuel as petrol can be restricted in some areas. Be aware that permits are required to cross aboriginal land.
