Forumites,
I'm installing a spot light and a driving light, is there any rule as to which way they go round? Which way performs the best? No doubt the way I've got them will be the opposite way around to the way the majority tells me. Thanks in anticipation for any information recieved.
Keep the shiny side up

G'day Martyn,
Presumably, you mean which side (L or R) should each light be mounted??
I don't think that there is a "right" or "wrong" way of doing it, simply whatever you prefer...
FWIW, I have the distance (spot) beam on the RHS.. closer to the centre of the road.. Others may prefer the opposite..

Martyn,
I think it’s personal preference, I don’t have that problem as I have a set of Lightforce 240’s, But they are set up with the Flood (Driving) Light on the Passenger Side to light up the Bush on the Verge and the Spot on My (Drivers) Side for Beaming down the middle of the road. Works for me.

Well i have done the totally wrong thing but it works well..
A couple of spotties on the bar like normal,,,,,,, both are flood lights,, one for left side of road and other for right,,,,,, and a lightforce240 in the middle for straight down the guts of the road...It is illegal to have odd lights on the front i believe but not a well known law....
You can see the furry things coming from all angles then...I had hit too many from the right hand side which made me do the lights like that...

yup, you are only allowed legally to have 2x pencil, or 2x spread... and none above the bonnet EG on top of the bar....

I might be wrong, but I think it's only in Vic where you can't mix the type of beams.

To solve, just run lightforce 240's with adjustable beams, solves all problems, you can have what you want then.

I now have three Ziel lights, ($140 ea from Repco) with a spot in the middle and the driving lights either side, but previous to buying the third light I had the spot on the drivers side and the driving on the passenger side.... a few people told me it was wrong, that I should have had the spot on the passenger side but I couldn't see the difference and found that the setup was great for me!

How do you find the Ziels, Brian?

I have two of the 210mm jobs, one in broad and one in pencil beam. Go them for $89 each when they were first launched. Pretty good value for a light of their build.

Savvas,

Funny story about how they came about.... some fellow clubbies won a pair in the raffle at a meeting.... being good friends, and they already had lightds, they gave them to us. Then my lovel SWMBO gave me a third as a gift and then there were three.
I love 'em! think they're the best lights ever!!! (I am biased!) The driving lights give a good sideways spread and the pencil beam cuts straight up the road brilliantly!! I think mine are the 210's as well..... not sure offhand, but I know they were $140 each.

I'm really happy with them too.

If you look out for the Repco sales, they often discount them quite heavily. During October, they were selling all the Ziel models at $79 ea, with a free clear cover (and that dumb stone guard).

Hi all

Tried a few different combinations and now just run 2 Hella 2000 driving lights. which gives good range and a great spread with no distracting hot spots. We found we can actually see furries further away than before because we are not having to concentrate on the narrow spot beam. The headlights fill in the closer stuff and we have made sure they are also set up properly.

When we ran the super Oscars (one spot, one driving) we tried it both ways and found that the spot on the left aimed to the edge of the road gave the best furry warning as it lit up the road edge and the grass edges they hide in. Great on the open road but useless in tight stuff as the spot light was too concentrated and you were relying on one less light for that 'angle' view.

Whatever you run getting the aiming (including height) set up so the light is where you need it is critical. I have jumped in a few mates vehicles with great lights that didn't show up anything because they had never been aligned.

regards

A

If you haven't done it already, then checkout David's excellent article on Driving Lights under Vehicle Requirements.
