Turbo for 2.4D hilux

Gday everyone,
i am considering putting a turbo and extractors onto my 1983 hilux 2.4,i know that a couple of guys here have done this after a quick look through the archives but i am unsure of what type/brand of turbo was used,did the early model Hilux's come out with a factory turbo?i think i read somewhere that the 85 model did but would this bolt up to the 83 engine?the engine was reconditioned about 20K km's ago,is there anything that should be checked before putting in a turbo?ie compression etc?finally where is a good place to look for a s/h turbo unit?i am thinking of getting it from a wreckers and then have it rebuilt.
just off the topic,for anybody who lives around shepparton area there is a new 4x4 wreckers opening up in Moroopna,and from what i hear they are going to be fairly large(not opening up until december/january.)

A little more research required. You cann't have extractors and turbo, different exhaust manifolds.
Hilux did not come with factory turbo until 2003?
A rebuilt from the wreckers, if you could find one, would cost just as much as a new one. There is a little bit more to just bouling it on. Where are you going to get the oil line from, and where is the return line going to go. Is the turbo
water cooled and again what about the
water hoses.
Sorry if I have burst you bubble but it is not that simple.

thanks for your quick resposne,my mistake re the extractors,actually require the correct manifold to bolt up to the turbo.what i meant by the rebuild was that i would buy one from a wreckers and then it have it rebuilt,depending on the condition of the unit.yeh i am probaly wrong regarding the factory turbo,just though i saw it mentioned on another website.the oil line would run off a tap in the sump,is that correct?am i right in thinking that an oil cooled turbo would not require a intercooler,
water hoses etc?i almost put a turbo on my old mazda 626,so i have a little bit of an idea about the install but nothing really specific to a toyota.

Have you priced a late model 3.0 or 2.8 for conversion. Might be cheaper specially in the long run.
rebuilding a dead turbo can cost as much as a new one.

Picked up a unit for my '84 2.4 w/manifold from wreckers for 500-. Oil feed attached to t-piece at back of alternatorand return line attached to existing hardware. Took me approx 4 hours to install on my own.
Had 2.5 inch straight thru system attachedlocally for 150- odd bucks, adjusted fuel pumpmyself but was quoted 100- to have it done properly with EGT and test run etc.
2 years and 40 000 kays later no dramas.
Go for it...

do you know what the manifold came off?i have rung a couple of wreckers but they need more details,also do you happen to know what brand the turbo was?regarding the T piece at the back of the alternator did you have to fit that yourself or is it already on there?i will ahve a look at my hilux when i get home tonight and it should make a bit more sense.what boost are you running?

Someone will probably correct me if I am wrong, but you should be able to pick up a turbo, manifold etc. from a Surf from a wrecker to fit your motor. One of the dudes on this site I believe has done similar but I can't remember his name. He will probably come in on this thread.

pembo i wouldnt do it if you dont really know what you are doing yourself, intercooler has nothing to do with oil or watercooled?
Oil feed is best taken from one of two
places, depending where the pressure sender is. Either next to the vac pump feed or near the bell housing behind exhaust. One will have sender in it , other probably plugged. If not, T into the pressure sender. Return goes to the vac pump drain. Replace with a banjo bolt for vac pump and drill into the end to put a hosetail in it for turbo drain. There are 3 different manifold patterns, it depends what year yours is. Somewhere on one of these websites I put up a post with the different patterns but cant remember where, try a search. But it is fiddly and it isnt worth paying someone else to do a second hand one. So if your not able to do it yourself then buy a denco one or fit a surf motor maybe?
