Working on fitting a second air/con, driven by the original air/con, and use it as a compresssor. On my 80 series LC, the original air/con has a single belt pulley, witch needs to be replaced by a duplex belt pulley. Done some testing, with the small hip of s$$$$t of a compressor that i've got, it take 18 and 1/2 minutes to fill up my 35 litres tank, with the air/con-compressor it takes only 1minutes 18 seconds. With some ingenious brakets, i know, i can fit the second air/con. The only probleme is that I would have to replace the single belt pulley by a duplex one. Has someone done that mod. before? and how hard is it.
Got a lathe, milling machine, and could machine my own pulley, because i'm sure i wouldnt find a pulley to suit
Any other comments are welcome.

double pulley clutches similar to aircon are also used on Jabsco and Johnson marine pumps which are used on fishing vessels. If you cant find thru truckster, try a proper marine shop, not a yotties but one that deals with fishing boats

Will make some phone calls, it would be great if I would find one that fits on my air-con. If not, well, I just have to make the pulley myself and somehow fit it on the original clutch.
Thanks for the tip

dirt-teaser,

I have ideas of installing a similar system into my 80 series. Buy i've been turned off this idea since the turbo diesel models have very little room for a second compressor(power steering pump needs to be moved etc). I presume yours is a petrol? - otherwise i'm interested in where and how you can fit the compressor.

As for the pulley - not sure, dont some earlier model LC's have a double belt alternator arrangement?

will fit the air con on a 80 series turbo and a non turbo both diesel. Both pulley has to be custum made as the turbo air con is different from the none turbo. Got it all work out today, and there is just enough room to fit the second air con on both engine version. In the none turbo version, I will have to shift the battery 90degree and move the air filter towards the master cylinder to have a bit more room. My friends turbo got plenty room.
if your are in Perth, you'r welcome to see how i will fit the babies together. If not in Perth, well, u just have to wait the pictures.......

Gday

I had a mate do that to his 60series, works like a charm, he had to make up the brackets for it and he just used a standard double pully that fitted, he mounted the compressor up high above the other compressor, bolting the bracket to the original compressor brackets, IM in the process to do it to my 60 series, once I can score or the relevent parts, (cheap scate here) why buy them when you can eventually score them for nothing lol.

I used his compressor to pump up my 33's once done it in less then half the time then my bush ranger.

I'm thinking of doing something similar with an old aircon, where is the best place to put it in an 80 series? Also, clean air is important with Refrig. compressors, do people use a separate filter or suck out of the car's air intake?

I beleive, the only place to fit it is next to the original air con. If you have a diesel none turbo, you will have to rotate the battery 90 degrees and shift the air filter towards the master cylinder to have more room.
Piece of cake in my case. I'm using an 200 ZX Nissan air con for the compressor. Big mama.
The air intake will be somewhere in the cab, air is always clean up there.
Of course it will be fitted with a air filter, " K&N" most likely. Was thinking making a mini snorkel, but I dont thing it's a good idea. Still working on it. However it would look cool.
Keep in touch and I will release all the details for a bottle scotch.

Had a good look in my LC 80 petrol and found a spot directly above the main aircon if I can get a pulley machined up to bolt on directly between the fan and where it goes on to the motor. it looks to me that the fan can move forward up to 40mm so if the pulley had a 4mm plate on one side it could bolt on there and still have the fan a safe distance from the radiator. Then it would just take some creative brackets to mount the compressor. what do you think?
a whole bottle of scotch? surely we could share, i like at least a johnny black

Hi Dirt Teaser I was looking at doing the same thing to my 75 ute and was going to try and use the back of the belt that is allready there like a spring loaded afair not sure if there is enough room yet but would save on running another belt, you might be able to save on running the belt and compressor all the time (fuel wise) Hope this helps Catchy snr

G`day Dirt-teaser, Seems like a great concept, only problem I see, other than room to fit it, is, what about lubrication for the bearings? I thought that the the air con fluid was also the lubricant.Would like to see the piccies when you have fitted it.
Keep wandering
Regards Bob

Hi Bob
There are only 1 brg, fully sealed, and greased, just under the pulley.
So, no need to worry about it. However, for the pistons, it's just a matter of disconnecting the inlet port and pour some oil in it. Thinking of some kind of T piece, with a plug, for it. Doesn't need much oil as the air con is running, what? ......10 minutes? at the time?. Don't forget, it takes only 1,18 minutes to fill up a 35 litres tank or a tyre.
It started up with quite a bit of thinking to do, but my friend and me have been SO impressed with the result, that there is NO chance that we are going to give up the project. Both of us got 80 series, so not sure how it would fit on an other 4by. But as we said : "if there is a will, there is a way"
As soon as the project is finish, I will post all the details.
