G'day - well the boss has the idea that now the kids are more or less not travelling anywhere with us due to their ages perhaps we should think about swapping from our current 2003 ST patrol to a new Navara dual cab. The thinking is that this will give us a bit more storage space etc for the big trip which is happening soon. Any suggestions? I love the car we've got and it has been an absolute gem but just having a think about it. Would not be adversde to a rodeo or hilux if they are a better choice but you would have to work hard to get me to look at a ford!!

Any suggestions or reference points for comparisons would be appreciated.

Strange, I thought the Patrol would have had more space....

Seems like a backward step to me.

I must admit, I do like the new Dual Cab Navara, looks very smart indeed.

Cheers

I'm seriously considering going from my Dual Cab to a 2003 patrol. My kids still travel with me so cab space is becomming an issue. There is anew HiLux TD due early next year, with an auto box available, IFS with coils at the front , more cab space and supposedly 33% more room in the tray. That sounds tempting too.
The patrol would be a far better off road vehicle than the Navara although the nvara will do a good job for you with a few mods.

Hi Gnome - I too am thinking about changing from the GU patrol to the Navara dual cab. Gotta say though I was a bit disappointed that you can't get the ZD30 coupled with an auto box. Like you I think with a canopy, _Affordable_Storage_Drawers.aspx etc there is much more storage available ....and this little truck also has a similar GVM and towing capacity to the patrol. Gonna think on it a while longer though.

If there's only the two of you, what about removing the rear seat and knocking up a platform to extend the cargo area forward. The space under would be useful for storage as well. Seems like a cheaper option and a plus is that you retain a vehicle with better ability.

Granted our Landie is more boxier in shape, but that's what we did for our trip up the Cape and the internal storage capacity was very substantial.

Having the rear doors for access to the front of your "new storage area" should prove a bonus to boot.

Cheers

I would not do this there will come a time when you might go for a camper or even a van for more comfort and no offence to all you Navara owners out there but going on the navara we have at work in reguards to towing well let me put this way stick with the Patrol, there ain't much room in those back seats in the Navara either, i'd fold the back seats down in the Patrol and use it that way heaps more room and easily accessable too.

I am not sure that the Patrol would be a better for towing than a Navara especially if they both have the same 3 lt diesel motor. The only difference is the intercooler. The Patrol has slightly more power but it weighs more.

I've gone from dual cabs to the patrol wagon and wouldn't go back. With just the two of us using the vehicle now, I've taken out the back seats and got more room now than I ever had in a dualcab. Accessing your gear from side and rear doors is a real plus.

Always found it awkward to get to all the gear in the dualcab through the windows in the canopy. Everything was either to hard to reach or too heavy to lift in and out at a distance. With the back seats out of the wagon, it's easy to reach everything through side or rear.
