Hi there,
I've recently purchased a 1986 HJ75 Troopy Diesel and am about to start getting it ready for an overland trip around Aus. The previous owner replaced the original tyres and rimms with a wider set of Sunraysia's. I'm considering going back to the originals. Is this a recommended move or just stay with the Sunraysia's? Also I've heard of people putting commercial truck tyres on 4x4's for prolonged life etc. Any ideas on that?
Thanks
GDC

Depends on where your going.
I did 23,000k's in my old HJ 75 ute touring around the Kimberleys
Pilbara and Gascoyne a few years back. Put 7.50x 16 rags on the ol' girl, mainly cause I had a shed full of them, took 8
wheels and only 1 came back with the same tyre on it. Both sizes are (10.5, 31, 15' and 7.50 x16) just about anywhere. Tyre shops in the north-west will throw used 7.50x 16's at you for stuff all, especially in the mining towns.
I did a lot of rough stuff and didn't want to wreck my wider tyres. Also fixing split rims on the road is easy IMHO
Down side is you really struggle in sand.
As I said, depends on the terrain where your going

GDC I would stick with the sunraysias and get some new 31 BFG A/T or something similar.Take along some of those tyre pliers that make changing tyres on these rims easier, but practice before you go.
I wouldnt choose a tyre for prolonged life over safety.Noise and handling on those long trips are also important considerations.
If your going offroad substantially the A/Ts will get a good grip in much of oz.
The wrong tyre will suck up the juice and possibly overheat engine and driveline.
There is no tyre that will do everything perfect so you have to decide on exactly where your going and choose the appropriate tyre
