I have a 1992 Toyota 80 series Turbo Diesel with 235.000Klm I have not had any problems so far however I plan to start towing and I was wondering if I should get the big end bearings replaced as I have heard that there was a weakness, I have rang 2 different Toyota dealers one said to replace and the other said there is no need.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks, Tony

The brother in law of a friend was on his way home from the around oz trip with caravan when one of his let go. Between what Toyota agreed to fund and what he had to pay the numbers added up to over $10k I think. The mech doing the work seemed to think that there was a potential fault and that a stitch in time might have saved nine.
I dont recall the model or year but I could find out if you like.
At least make a few sound enquiries till you are satisfied. If they let go they can make a mess especially if it is towing downhill in steep conditions

This subject has been done to death before, so maybe a look through the archives will help.
Just to fill you in briefly, the 1991 - 1993 factory turbo's had a problem with the bottom crank bearings and conrod bearings (
mine included) and are prone to bearing failure.
Depending on age, kilometres and service history, Totota have come to the party with costs (
mine included), so it is worth checking it out with Toyota.
At worst, the cost is approx $400 if you have to pay. Much cheaper than a rebuild.
Good luck

Tony,
I don't what state you live in but if you want to speak to someone ring TLC Autos in O'Connor
Perth on 08 9314 3714 as all they do are Cruisers, Hiluxs Pardos etc. They have been good to me and they know what they are talking about and have not ripped me off or treated me like a fool. Another place to try is Robson Bros 4WD Service also in
Perth on 08 9358 1441 they also have a very good reputation here in WA.

Thanks, to the replies and I checked the archives I have booked the car in for next week to have the bearings replaced, I just would not feel comfortable on a remote trip without the work being done.
Thanks, Tony
