I run a 105 series GXL Landcruiser; am thinking of upgrading tyres from standard 265 to 285.
I’m just a little worried of the loss of power on the black top, as I don’t have a turbo. Am I worrying about nothing or is the loss of power significant?

Hi Chris,
Check post out: 17282
I have a not turbo diesel and eventually went with 265, same as my old tryres so I can't comment on the potentail loss of power but this post persuaded me to go with 265's,

Can't help on the power issue. On my 100 GXL I went from 265 without turbo to 285 with turbo in one jump. Turbo makes a big difference, even going up the tyre size. They fit ok in the guards, and I prefer the gearing change with the manual - lower revs at 100 km/h. Have to balance the loss of straight line performance against the extra clearance etc. Good luck

I'm bringing my L/C over to Aus next year and am currently running 285/75/16 Expect to have to replace a couple of tyres and am not to sure whether to get them here in NZ or wait until I get over. Could someone give me an idea of the cost of BFG A/T 's. Thank you in advance.
Andy

From my experience, the minor effect of power loss running 285 s as compared to
to 265 s is small: however the 285 tyre has a marked improvement in off-road situations, with reguard to ground clearance. So what im probably suggesting is. if you do not go of road - stay with 265s, if going into the high country regulary go with the 285.

I beg to differ here, I run 265/75 on and off road with two sets of tyres and have no problems in the high country with clearance.
The gearing hence speedo stay the same, chains fit both size tyres so I can still use the road tyres if I have to on short trips and no problems with fitting the 285 size on the rear door.
