Recently saw first hand the ineffectiveness and danger of a cheap snatch strap. Was with the club on a beach weekend. Instructors put on a recovery demo. Bogged a Rodeo - to be recovered with a Troopy. Rodeo driver supplied his strap. Troopy took off and ... strap broke. The stitching which secures
the loop just let go. Comparing a real strap with the cheap one revealed that the el cheapo only had about 3 inches of stitching and widely spaced at that. I think he said he bought it at a
camping store. Told him to take it back, tell them what a heap of sh.. it is, get a refund and advise them to stop selling them.
Buying decent recovery gear is a no brainer yet some people still try to save a few bucks. It just isn't worth it as your life could potentially depend upon your gear.

G'day Chris
I have broken one in the past (a real one that had been used quite a bit) trying to extract a very stuck Cruiser. It made a big bang. This one was so pi.. weak it just made a little pop.

enzo
it wasnt cheap, cost me about $55.
what it does point out is to look very carefully at what you buy, and compare items before you decide on one
good quality doesnt have to cost more

$55 for a snatch strap is cheap......
when you think about how much life is worth I would think $55 is dirt cheap for a strap...... $155 is cheap for a strap....
It could be the difference between getting thwacked in the head and not getting thwacked in the head by a broken strap that may be carrying a shackle!!!!!!!!!!!!!

why would a broken strap be carrying a shackle?
unless a strap is not used properly the only reason a shackle would fly is if the vehicles hook or similar attachment point broke.
we are not joining straps with shackles are we?

Quite right howie... you got me there!!!! :-)
A broken strap shouldn't have a shackle on it!!!!
I admit to getting carried away with the answer... but I still stand by my comments regarding the pricing of the strap.
Thanks mate

There's a lot of untrained people out there who may
well join straps with shackles. We have no Aust standard when it comes to straps. How is a buyer supposed to know if a strap is a quality item. We should have a standard so it can carry a stamp. Even top quality straps can break after time. Our shacles have a standard, why not our straps.

There sure is a lot of untrained people out there... And I totally agree with Ray about the rated strap thing... why don't we have a standard on straps???

I agree that you need to use quality gear. What I don't agree with is that $$$ = quality. I use only Just Straps gear and have complete confidence in its quality. It is considerably cheaper than the major branded gear such as ARB. IMHO you can throw money at stuff in the attempt to chase quality...not always with the desired result.

G'day Moose,
just out of curiosity, did the instructors put any air brakes/dampers on the strap? You haven't mentioned any damage so it sounds like they did.
Glad you 'lived to tell the tale' mate!
kind regards,
Jeremy.

Nothing on the strap. No damage other than to strap. Personally I've never seen anyone put something on a single strap. On wire ropes yes.
Cheers
