Hi all, just a post to let you know how Straddie's looking these days - especially from a 4wd point of view.
We went
camping with the family for the week, crossing over on the new Sea Stradbroke ferry service (very swish ferries for the same price as the others).
We camped at a small caravan site near Point
Lookout called Traveller's Rest. It was mostly permanents and caravan sites but also had a nice, smallish grassed area up near
the beach (where we setup). It'd be a great spot to book out if there was a small party of you (6 sites) and booked out the whole area.
It's been 5 years since we last went and it was amazing that there wasn't a lot more development happening. The beaches were great for the kids (especially Cylinder which also has a small
camp ground) and I had a ball in the 4WD.
However, I must say that more of the island appears locked up to sand mining. On the North half of the Island I could only find a couple of track's through the island. You can still drive all the way down the east coast and Flinders on the Norht coast and there appeared to be a couple of tracks running off the main east west road that I didn't get a chance to try.
Note that
Blue lake is now closed. There was talk of it reopening at some stage but no date is published. We had a ball at
Brown Lake though - it's almost a mini version of some of the lakes on Fraser, with plenty of sandy areas to sit and relax. We followed the 4wd track around the lake to find a quite spot and to launch the canoe.
The tracks were mostly easy with the odd deeper section, particularly coming off
the beach. (Although that's probably changing right now as I look out at the rain pouring down in Brissie)
I've also recorded tracks from the GPS if anyone's interested - just post a reply.
All the best
Juma

Ops, should probably have made it clear I'm talking about North Stradbroke Island - just off
Brisbane!

Yeah the talk of track closures on Straddie is like everywhere else. The Greenies whinge and get the
track closed, then the fireies complain that the tracks are so overgrown that they cant get their trucks in.
I was hoping that when the bushfires went through there last year it would promote the opening of the tracks, but alas, it seems they are still closed.
Looking to
camp on main beach between 23rd Dec - 5th Jan. Silver dual cab Hilux.
Cheers,
Glenn.
