Looking at my map it would appear that one can drive from
Cairns to
Darwin on the maccadam...Is this the case or is this a cartographers dream?

The only way I can see you getting from
Cairns to
Darwin on the blacktop is down through
Townsville, west onto the Flinders Hwy through
Mount Isa continuing west on the Barkly Hwy until you hit the Stuart Hwy. And then north to
Darwin.
Unless of course I am missing something here.....
Personally I would go the back way on the dirt but thats just me.

Rick, the answer to your question is ...."Yes, you can", but my question is "Why would you want to?"

We drove across from 3 ways (about 700kms south of
Darwin) to
Cairns in August. We went through Boorooloola,
Normanton,Croyden then down through the
Atherton tablelands and
Kuranda to
CAirns. Most of the way was one lane bitumen. There was a part that wasn't tar not that it was particularly bad though. We towed an outback jayco and 3 kids and had plenty of whinging but no flats. It took us 5-6 days. It wasn't the most interesting of drives but certainly gave us an appreciation of the size of Australia. Coming down through the
Atherton tablelands was very pretty and good 2 lane roads.
