80 and 85 series tyres - who is using these?

I know these are a little harder to get, but does anyone around here use them? Nearly everyone seems to be on 75series. I think MTR does a 255/85 for eg. I prefer a slightly narrower tyer yet still big diff clearence. any stories?

I run 235/85/16 BFG Muddies on my Rangie - couldn't be happier with them. Gave them a decent workout last year (22,000km round Australia, including The Gunbarrel Hwy,
Gibb River Road, Tanami Track &
Simpson Desert). I've done around 40,000km all up on them (60% offroad) and they've probably got around 20,000km left. They handled sand driving no worries, and they've given me an extra 35mm of diff clearance above standard (handy for those rutted high-country tracks...).

I use 255x85r16 cooper ST's on my disco for road/desert work.
In this size their are only 2 makers. BFG with their muddie & Cooper with the ST & STT.
I wanted an all terrain so only had one choice.
This size tyre works very
well when aired down. I have found that it doesn't bulge to the side much but the footprint really increases lengthwise, great for sand work.
On a recent
big desert /
border track trip a 285x75r16 MTR on a cruiser took a stake 3 times thru the side wall, it was stuffed. Where as my tyres didn't even get any scuffs on them. Maybe it was just luck but I think tyre shape/profile can play a big part.
For me 85 profile tyres are great but I might go back to 235x85r16 next time as these are more common.
Oh and I run 7.50x16 (100 profile) cross plys for my mud work in the high country.

thanks for the replies. What do you think the main advantages of the narrower tyer are? also, how does the 7.5 in imperial equate to a 100 series tyre? (so i can convert next time)

Not too sure about the advantages in performance of narrower tyres (there's plenty more experts on the
forum than me), but the advantages I found were that they were cheaper, have good availability & are legal to fit to my fourbie. The standard tri-spoke Rangie rims are also only 6 inches wide, so going greater than a 235 isn't recommended...

7.50x16 is approx. 32" in diameter, similar to a 235x85r16 but even narrower. The 7.5 is approx. the tread width and wall height.
I think this the standard tyre size for base model cruisers and patrols.
The narrower tyre cuts thru the soft track surface easier and get down to the good stuff. Good in the victorian high country.
A disadvantage I have found though is less sideways stability on clay tracks.

i ran a 255/85 16 on my Cruiser for a while , it measure to me a 33.5 " tyre, I was happy with them but desided i wanted a 35" tyre so went for the 315/75 / 16 , Your speedo will be out by around 9 kms at 100 kmh.
they worked very
well in mud , but now I can balloon them flat for sand also , best of both worlds
