Hi,

Im having a DDO (Daddy's Day Off) tomorrow and was wondering if the trek found in the trek notes section - St Albans to Wollombi is suitable to do on your own or should I wait and go with atleast one other person. I dont have a winch and will only have my son with me.

Also can anyone tell me how long this trek will take and if the river crossings will be passable. How far is Wollombi back to the reptile park.

Thank you.

Hi Brad,
I've driven this way many times before, mostly before I had a 4x4, its just a top quality dirt road and shoudln't take more than an hour.

No idea how far it is to the reptile park but make sure you top up on Dr Jurds Jungle Juice at he pub in Wollombi, that's the reason we keep going back that way...

Thank you,

Is this the trek with the water crossing at the end of it and do you think it would be very deep with all the rain.

Just read the trek notes after I answered and I have been that way too i.e took the turn off into Yengo National Park after you hit bitumen. We went on our own and didn't have to lock the hubs. Mind you it hadn't rained there for many months when we went.

If it looks too bad just turn around an go back its never too far to back track from anyplace along that route..

You'll have a great timeand on a Friday too, not too many people coming the other way...

Brad,

I think the river crossing you refer to is Payne's Crossing - (pic in my Rig Pics) - this isn't part of this trek, - in the graphic, it is shown to the NW of Wollombi - Pretty sure it is closed now anyway (private property)

Pretty sure also, that the trek as described in the Notes doesn't have any river crossings.

many years ago I used to live up in the top end of the Yarramolong valley.
When I finished work in the winsor or blacktown area {I was a motorcycle courier at the time} I used head home via Wisemans ferry and St Albans. Straight up this road to the end of it near the big"A" or bush fire Brigade on the Wollombi - Peats ridge road. Quick right hand turn then left at the big "A" and the national park road will drop you down into the valley near Bumblebee hill.

I was useing either a BMW K100-RT or the big GTR1000 .Both are large road bikes and I could do the St Albans road in under 45 minutes.

honestly you dont need a 4WD for this road get out there and enjoy yourself.this road is one of the best rally roads around ,smooth flowing dirt and fantastc corners....take a fiat 124 and enjoy your self 40-60 in the tight stuff and 160 plus up the straights.....just hang the back end out and steer with the throttle.

and have a look out the siggn 10 kms north of St Albans last ime I was there it was "POP 8 3\4 and a dog with 3 legs"

"suitable to do on your own."

Yes, absolutely.

"how long this trek will take and if the river crossings will be passable."
It depends on how long to spend looking at some of the sights along the way. The drive itself, without stops or deviations, probably isn't much more than 2 to 2.5 hours at an "easy" pace.

There are several creek crossings. One at Paynes Crossing if you do the Old Settlers Track but that is definitely closed. There's another at the Putty Road exit of the Yengo (Yango?) Track and a small one not long before you get to Wollombi as you follow the Trek notes. There would have to be a serious flood of the region for that one to be impassable to any 4x4.

"How far is Wollombi back to the reptile park?"

About 20 minutes or so.

Have fun. It's a very pleasant drive. Make sure you stop at the Finchley Trigg Point to check out the 360 degree views of the region.
