Hi all - just got the shock of my life today. Recently upgraded to RAA Plus (live in South Australia) thinking that with all the travel we do would be handy to have the extra bebefits/longer towing etc in the unfortunate incident of a breakdown. Mentioned to the operator on the phone when she signed me up that 'we go 4wding and travelling with the camper trailer' Anyway, when I am int he country (defined as non-metropolitan) RAA will only cover towing on vehicles under 2000 kgs. Since my Jackaroo weighs 2045 kgs unloaded, I will not be covered. Phoned up and verified -nup, not covered. Will have to pay for own tow.

Just thought I'd let people know in case they didn't already. This basically means patrols, landcruisers, most pajeros etc will not be towed at RAA expense, even if a RAA Plus member.

Hi

I think NRMA is 2,500kg, but this rules out most as well.

Yep,

I got sucked in as well. On the advertising they claim vehicle recovery as a benefit. I enquired on the phone regarding beach recovery as an example. No problem providing it is a legal to be there, eg. like tracks on our road maps.
When you pay up you get a nice glossy brochure that may as well just say, this is a waste of time for you. You live and learn, only $30, so not a huge expense.
Sadly the RAA are not the reliable organisation they once were.

I was brought in from Barnett River roadhouse, 400+ kms across the Gibb River Rd, to Derby (tilt bed truck). RAA plus organised the recovery and was most helpful. I was driving a 99 Jackaroo and towing a Kimberly kamper. It cost $100 to have the camper towed.
I will be maintaining my membership for a long, long time, they were terrific.

Happy trails, Mike.

Just got these exclusions from the RAA web site. All of which could apply to 4bys. I'll keep my membership but the RAA should spend more time on motoring and less on home security, glossy brochures and the like.

"Travelling costs for any distance beyond 32km (Plus members 100km) from the nearest country depot.

Towing of vehicles weighing over 2 tonnes, modified vehicles & some trailers/caravans.

Removing bogged vehicles from beaches, swampland, forests, fire tracks, private property and locations not trafficable by a conventional 2-wheel drive vehicle."

I wouldn't expect service from them when off road tbh but what exactly is classed as off road??

We have RACQ total cover and when in Canberra last year put ULP in Diesel tank. After putting in 88 litres realised error and called for a tow truck. The NRMA came and charged us $132 for the short tow to the depot because our F250 was over their 2500kg limit. When we go home contacted RACQ because our policy says that you only have to pay if special towing is required. I explained that the tilt tray had previously towed a sedan before ours, that is why we had to wait and they sent a cheque to cover a full refund in a couple of days.

I have recently had a look at BIG4 assist ( www.big4.com.au ) and their policy will cover any vehicle up to 12,000kg and they also have policies for caravans/trailers. The only stipulation that I can see is that you have to be on a road that a 2WD truck can get to you on. I suppose if you are on a 4WD track it would pay to get another 4WD to tow you out to main road and then call them for help. Their prices seemed quite reasonable too.

Yes I've asked the NRMA for clarification and just get referred to the website/brochure so it would appear that 2.5T is the go officially.
I think you will find though if you join one of the other mobs for road service it is quite often the local NRMA fella that will turn up especially in the bush.

"Towing costs for any distance beyond 8kms (20km for Plus members) within a serviced metropolitan area.

Towing of vehicles weighing over 2 tonnes, modified vehicles & some trailers/caravans."

so when you think about it any thing above 20klm for RAA plus in Metro area is at members cost.

so out side the metro?

like all of you, i've been paying for RAA plus for the accomodation?

Will tell them to go get nicked tomorrow

Thanks for that D-Jack

I renewed my RAA membership this year again but I doubt if it is of much value for people like us living in the country. When we updated our vehicles a few months ago I got light headed and asked for a comprehensive insurance quote......I might have known what the reply would be. So we only insured for Balance of 3rd party only. I also have house insurance with them which isn't too bad.

Maybe we should dispense with these organisations and makle more friends across the country who can help if we have a problem with our vehicle :o)

RACQ will not cover my caravan for our BIG trip (aprox 2 yrs) if out of state for an extended time. So what do we do about these motoring orginizations that are supposed to be there for its members and their supposed reciprocal arrangements with the motoring orgs of the other states. Have gone to CIL insurance for van and no problems with travelling around for an extended time.

Well i am a member of plus and so is my good ol mate Dick....
On the way back from Cape York we noticed a bit of smoke which actually turned into a huge amount of steam from the exhaust when we were in Cobar... One call to the RACV or whatever it was and the vehicle was towed to dealer in Cobar and put on semi or train and then delivered right to his door in Adelaide suburbs within 5 days of us leaving it behind........... GQ RB30 1991...... 2560kgs.......NO CHARGE at all....
