Toohey , you need to get your motor hot and then drain oil . If the oil cools down , it takes yonks to come out

you also want the suspended particle to come out also, if you do it cold the bleep settles on the bottom of sump and doesnt come out with the oil,
but i think what he is getting at is that the oil drains back from the galleries etc. Just check that the oil filter is tite as it is possible the oil is draining back from there. otherwise its not really a prob

The way I read the manaul you dont have enough oil. Check for correct level after a minute or so. In the morning it should read overfull but that is not when or how to check oil level. I think you are in danger of running the oil of the bottom of the stick on a long trip.

My 3 litre always showed overfull if checked cold.

If I understand you right you are saying that when you check your oil after leaving the vehicle overnight the level is correct but when you check it half an hour after stopping it is only showing half full. I have a ZD30 and have never tested this. But I do know that the quantity of oil needed to change the level from the bottom to the top of the cut out section of the dip stick is only about 1 litre if that. You are better to be fractionally under full than overfull. I suggest that if its reading right when cold there is no problem.

By the way, for the ZD30 motor Factory Spec oil filter (cartridge) changes are at 10,000km and oil changes at 15000km NOT every 5000km. 50000km changes are for the 4.2 diesel. If you change the oil filter only at 10000km you will have to top up the oil. This is a hitech diesel and does not need 5000km oil and filter changes. Check it out with Nissan if you don't believe me. Newer LR Discovery's have 20000km changes I believe.

Personally for convenience I change both at 10000km irrispective of what type of driving I have been doing. Visually the oil, Shell Rimula X is still good for plenty more kms.

Hi,

Same on mine.. Is a bit confusing. I changed oil last week (just got the truck) and put about 8l in and ran engine, checked for leaks etc. When I checked level after I stopped engine, it was at low. So poured some more in. It has about 9l in now and reads overfull in the morning but just right after engine has run.

Cheers
