OK, OK ....fine!
I'll drive a manual again! F/up from post 17313.
So.... which vehicle to buy to do the country in?
Can't decide.....
$30-40,000 to spend. +usual mods. towing camper.
To narrow things down I have discounted a Nissan which leaves, from my research so far, the following...
1. 80 series landcruiser - diesel for economy.
2. 78 troopy - non-turbo – 2001+ on.
After the recent much discussed 'Reliability of Electronics in Outback' post (still reading it.....), I have decided to choose from the above 2.
Any experiences?..... especially on parts / breakdown costs, being Toyota's.
This needs to be decided once and for all, so I'm counting on some good old fashioned 'biased' reply here. :)
Cheers

Okay, okay, okay............. I'll stick my hand up..........
I have posted previously here about getting a new Land Rover Defender 90 series, but It can't happen for reasons best left alone.
The guys here mainly suggested that I go for the Troopy.
I guess if there were that many people extolling the virtues of the Troopy, there must be something in it!
I don't own, or have not driven either of these vehicles, but seeing I want something spartan, like the L R, the guys here seemed to think the Troopy would fit the bill nicely.
I have taken their comments on board, and started looking for a relatively recent secondhand unit, with all the extras.
Hope this sorta helps.............

Hi Oddy
Having owned and driven the 80 series, have only been a passenger in a troopy and now drive a Nissan, why have you discounted the Nissan. I have owned the 3TD patrol that went
well and now have a Ute, after the 80 series I have no complaint with the Nissan, much less expensive to buy. Interesting that the 4WD club I am in started with 85% Toyotas and now has 75% Nissans. $30000 should get you a good GU, just miss the first series of the 3TD.
Regards Ray
GU Ute and Son with GQ Ti Both converts from Toyotas

Go the Troopy. 180 litres of fuel, heaps of room & built a bit more solid. Parts cost between the 2 shouldn't be much different. Craig.......

I think your final two choices are spot on.I own a 2001 Troopy which has done 2 trips to Arnhamland,1 around Aus.,and a recent trip through the Territory and Queensland. Before that I have done numerous trips with different model Troopys mainly up north and north Queensland.I have had no problems except the usual tyre punctures,so my choice would definately be a Troopy as they also give you a LOT more room in the back and come standard with two 90 litre tanks--very handy in the outback.Make sure you get the newer
suspension which I think came out in 2000--good luck!

Hi Oddy,
Have you considered a Challenger? And before you laugh, I am completely serious..a very under rated car. I have a silver 2002 5 speed manual, all kitted out (
suspension, long range
tank, bull bar,
driving lights, dual battery, all terrain tyres, towbar, cargo barrier etc) still under factory warranty that you can have for $29,000.
Ver capable towing too.
Have a serious think and then let me know if you want a picture.
Cheers
