Has anyone had this problem or do they know what the problem is. I have a Prado Auto diesel TD 2001 model and hooked up to a
kimberley camper to take it for a test run this morning and after a sluggish start imagine my surprise when at the first
hill I stopped to see how it would pull from a standing start and nothing happened. The truck was in drive and reeved up to about 2400 revs and after about 3 goes the auto transmission light came on and you could smell the oil.Nothing happened in 2nd gear when I manually dropped down and it only moved at a brisk pace when I manually changed down to 1st gear (as I expected it to do when I was in drive).Obviously it is not changing down or something. Some knowledge / advise would be great before I front Toyota on Monday. WEhen I unhooked the trailer there was no problem as I had no load.

G'day Big Bo,
I'm not sure why that would happen......but in case it is some weird electrical fault, I would suggest you try it again with the camper on, but with the electrical connection plug left unplugged. If it goes okay, you will know that there is some sort of short in the trailer/vehicle wiring.
It's probably not the case, but at least you could eliminate that as a cause (or perhaps confirm that i am correct).
Good luck mate

Thanks Roachie, but I don't think so since it pulled with no effort once I dropped down to 1st gear manually. It's as if there was no gear there I tend to think it may be the transmission selector or computer, the warning light came on and the oil must have got hot because we could smell it.

I would be focussing on the clutch....easy check is to disconnect the camper, put the handbreak on, put car into 2nd gear and give it some right foot. If clutch is ok car will overpower handbreak if clutch is shot handbreak will win out.

Hi big bo,
Just a thought, did you have the trans in manual mode. In my patrol if I switch it to manual mode (hold) it does the same thing because it's trying to take off in second or third gear, and if I throw it back to first, it goes. If I switch it to "Auto" mode it takes off in first no matter which gear i'm in.

Same thing happens in our tribute.
It has a second gear lock so when you pull it down to 2nd it doesn't shift between 1st and 2nd it is locked in second.
I'd say it was trying to take off in 3rd.

Big Bo ... Does the Prado auto have a winter mode button? This may have been "bumped" accidentally leaving you with a 3rd gear take off which may not be enough to get the fourby and trailer going together.
Once you manually selected 1st, it may have disengaged the winter mode and off you went.
Have you been able to repeat the exercise to make sure it wasn't a one off?

No winter button Savas and yes I drove 1/2 way up the
hill in 1st and then stopped and tried again in drive with the same result. I know it is not a one off because it has happened to us before with no load on our front drive ( 4 times over a period of 2 years), and each time with a bit os selector fiddling we got going again, but never big time like this, Toyota didn't want to know me last times, because I could not reproduce the result, this time I will kick up more fuss and get an assurance from them that if it happens in the never never that they will come and get me and fix the truck, warranty or no warranty.Matbe I will ask them if I am covered if the transmission blows up?.

mate some autos are programmed to take off in 2nd by default and only grab first if you tromp the pedal down quickly and far enough, had a rodeo that did it and it drove me nuts.. If the prado has a tv cable on the throttle body for the auto it may need adjusting. Try the same but give it a sharp jab on the boot and see how it goes. The auto may also have a gremlin in the auto computer or it may have self learnt to always take off in higher gears (common if you usually tootle around on the road) try driving around for a week 'launching' it from every standing start and see if it learns a better shift pattern..
BTW i would get the trans serviced straight away and get the full lines / cooler
well flushed as
well.
