hi everyone i am hoping that someone can give me advise on wiring up my second battery.
i have a dual-cab hilux and wish to put my engel & second battery in the back tray.
this is my idea, run a 120 amp lead from the startermotor solanoid,to the second battery, then a 120 amp lead from the chassi to the second battery and put a isolator switch in the possitive lead.
from there hook up the engel, or should i come straight off the main battery terminals?

thankyou johno!

Johno,

I'd get a redard isolator ($120) and mount that under the bonnet and run your -ve straight from your starter batt. to ensure a good earth. I ran 4AG cable ($5/m) which is not cheap and I put them in split plastic tube to protect the cables and then wrapped it with insulation tape to keep stones/dirt out also. I ran it from the engine bay to the chasis fixing with cable ties all the way along the chasis to the tub then come up though a hole in the tub. Make sure you get a rubber ring from Clark rubber or somewhere for the hole you drill.

Happy cold beer.....Leroy

Ps make sure you leave a bit of slack for the cable where it attaches to the chasis. The cab and tub moves on the chasis a bit.

hi leroy hope im not bothering you too much, i have one more question.
when i set up the isolator this way is it ok for me to charge the auxilary
battery in the tub, straight from my generator without disconecting
anything and will that also charge the main battery aswell.
(short question will it charge in reverse).
thanks johno!

I'd recoment disconnecting the batt because I have seen the isolator stay on after I have turned off the ignition. So it could charge in reverse but it's not designed for that. Give Rearc a call. If you have to connect the gen to the battery it only takes 30 sec to disconnect the batt. Dont let the +ve touch anywhere incase the solenoid is still on. Use some of those batt terminals with the wingnuts to connect the cables and get an auto elec to crimp on the lugs as they have a big crimping tool to suit 4AG cable.
Leroy

Ps and full marks Bonz, youre on the ball!

Assuming vehicle is used daily, IMHO you do not need a second battery to safely run an Engel (of recent vintage). Run a 20A pos to the tray off battery, earth it local and run off that. Use a $20 Projecta Sure Start low voltage cutout in circuit. Power Pack backup is optional and recommended (regardless of Engel). Dual batt for most modern compressor fridges is an aftermarket industry self perpetuated conspiracy. Upgrade main battery if you really really feel the need to spend your cash.

Billy,
I agree with you but add the proviso that you need to be running your vehicle each day. People who stay put when camped, particularly in warm weather will still want a second battery.

Cheers
Phil

Johno, yes, you need one for sure. FYI, someone is selling Redarc isolators on ebay of late. Then again, 3 way Chescolds are going for around $400 on ebay too..but that's another story!!
