......... one sometimes wonders how comfortably.

Now, it is accepted that the humble swag was pretty much borne out of necessity here in Australia, and has become almost legend both here and in New Zealand as far as practicability is concerned.

In some parts of the USA, people are moving back to " Cowboy Bedrolls ". Some of these units are modeled on what was used in the Cavalry, very authentic indeed, whilst others are simply based upon the standard Cowboy Bed Rolls that we all grew up with on the big silver screen with John Wayne & the likes.......

Okay, so I've got three countries covered. What does the rest of the world use for overnighters?
I am sure that say in South Africa, they have something really cool & useful. What about in say... Russia?, the horsemen on the Siberian Plains, what do they use?
What about China, Mongolia, Japan..........

I have not been able to narrow these questions down on the net too easily, so, I'm wondering if anyone here can shed some light on sleeping arrangements in these countries. I am sure they all have tents, but I am more interested in when they DON'T use tents.

I find it hard to imagine that we are the only ones, along with the Cowboys, who use a ready made sleeping device, such as our swag.

Cheers

Tried a few different ways of typing it all in, like "Mongolian Bed rolls" & stuff.
Lots about Geghis Kahn, but not how they slept.

Any info just seemed to skirt over what I was looking for.

I am thinking that surely, in other countries, they too would have a good system of touring, without the need to pitch tents.

I'll find out eventually.

Cheers

Don't the Russians just use Vodka? I did read some years ago about some people in Africa...or the like, who sleep on the side, propped up on their elbow, with their head resting on their shoulder, so a certain bug doesn't crawl into their ear during the night.

Black Wolf is a good tent.

I ended up with the Turbo 300, which I think is a little large to be pitching every day whilst touring.

We had picture perfect weather during our stay, so I can't comment on it's weather proofing and stability.

All in all, a good tent........ not as fast as say an Oz Tent & Tourer, but a hell of a lot of good useable room.

Black Wolf kept Mrs. Wolfie & Mr. Wolfie very cosy indeed........

Cheers

Chinese adventurers used to use a form of thatched reed mat, and also woven green bamboo matting, that only lasted about a month before herdening and they had to replace them with newly woven ones from material along the side sof the tracks. I did a study on these at school back in the 70's when we looked at bedrolls and swags.. they did it hard there but the weather is more hospitable than our outback. Nepalese used animal skins interleaved they could speel in snow and not feel the cold too much, they also used to travel in groups and share their beds to conserve body heat in extreely cold climates. We really mucked up choosing to sleep alone.........

So, these still roll up into a roll?

What did they do if it rained?

Interesting comment about sleeping in groups...........

If you look on the net, under winter camping, they advocate not to sleep in pairs, yet every animal I know of will cuddle up to another animal, same animal or not, to gain warmth in the winter.
