Hi All

Over the weekend I changed the Oil in my 1996 80 series L/C gear box and wow what a difference.

Looked for some good oil "Castrol". Checked the bottles and found the one that said it was for 4WD's. EPX 80W/90.

Great put it in and what a change, went from OK to shift gears to terrible. Hard to upshift and terrible to downshift especially when cold!!!!!!!

Rang Castrol Tech Support this morning and You gesses it Wrong oil ????????

Should have used VMX-M 70W/85 or VMX 80 for better shifting of gears.
The VMX 80 oil was beside the EPX but the EPX was the only one that said it was for 4WD's.

Seem that the EPX is too thick.

Now I have to spend another $32.00 for oil and change out the oil that I put in on the weekend (which I have no use for ) and put the correct oil in.

This is just a warning to check the web and or the Manufacturers books, not just
read the bottles and if in doubt ring someone.

Have put a complaint to Castrol about their labeling and am waiting to see if anything happen.....will let you know.

G'day Tony

Bugger that you had to learn the hard (read: long) way about the best oil for your box.

A bit of info here.

You will be really happy with the VMX-80. The cold shifts should now be great. Did you do the transfer case while you were at it? Should be enough left in the container to just do both.

Cheers,

Wazza.

Gday Newman
Books say use 75w/90.
Caltex listings state 75w/90
Toyota service uses Mobil 424 fluid. The same in Caltex is Textrans. This is an 80 grade oil and is the only grade to use in the gearbox. I would say it is similar to the Castrol equivalent.
Continue to use the 80w/90 in the TCase.
I use LS90 in both rear and front diffs.
Check www.datacheck.com.au/lube/caltx_au/
Site is great for all cars/trucks/ag equipment.

Cheers

Was in the shop and couldn't look up what was the best. Just went by the label. Just goes to show the label is not always right.
