Hi forumites,

The clutch on my '99 2.8 GU is just starting to slip at ~ 145,000 kms. So time to change and hopefully flywheel OK.

Thanks to previous posts I was directed to Daikin clutch kit (note that Daikin Clutch Aust are now EXEDY Australia P/L). EXEDY are the OEM clutch/flywheel supplier to Nissan (amongst others). I also priced PBR kit but they don't offer a heavy duty option for this vehicle/engine combo.

Anyhow, the purpose of this message was to let people know that EXEDY also supply a replacement clutch kit with solid steel flywheel to replace the OEM dual mass flywheel (very expensive as discussed in other threads). They also supply the dual mass flywheel if preferred.

I am hoping that my flywheel is OK, though won't know until the clutch is out. Best price via local distributor (Coventry's) was $285 for std clutch kit (NSK-7130), $388 for HD clutch kit (NSK-7130HD) and $879 for solid flywheel kit including HD clutch, etc (NSK-7336 or NSK-7336HD). The OEM dual mass flywheel is 12310-VB311. The above are prices are trade (RRP for solid kit is $1762).

I hope this info proves useful for anyone else faced with a clutch change on subject vehicle.

Regards,
Hugh

Thanks for the info Hugh.
I hope not to have problems for a while yet as my G U 111 has only
clocked up 3600 in 3 mths.
Going like a rocket, on the black top, the 3 litre gets around 10km/l
at around 115 km/h. All flat from Busselton to Perth and return.

Thanks Hugh - I have a 1998 gu 2.8tdi with 160000kms on it. No problems with the clutch (or anything else for that matter).................YET. I would appreciate it if you could give a final run down on the parts and costs when the job's finished.
Cheers

Hi Pete,

I thought I would get back to you re this saga.

After initial slippage and organising a new clutch kit (I went for the HD clutch kit at $388) there was no further slippage noticed, even with a trailer load of top soil on some steep hills near home. So I figure the money's better saved and was planning to return the clutch, when two weeks ago it slipped again. After that I also noticed some drivetrain shudder during accels but no more slipping.

So I rang up my mate Neil (4WD mechanic) and booked it in for replacement, which he did yesterday. Wow, was I lucky to change it when I did. The clutch plate was really worn with only 0.2mm clearance between rivet heads and pressure plate and a little more clearance on the flywheel side (but not much). There was heaps of clutch dust and thrust bearing and spigot bush were extremely dry. There was signs of slippage on the pressure plate but flywheel OK and dressed up nicely so no need to be replaced.

What a change driving with the new clutch today. Clutch pedal force req'd is in fact much less - I assume all the dryness was making actuation pretty hard. Clutch take up occurs with ~ 1" pedal lift so after a few embarrassing bunny hops I'm now driving normal (almost like learning to drive again).

Anyhow, to answer your question, all up cost was $388 for HD clutch kit and $250 to have it fitted. For $638 all up I think I've done OK.

Regards,
Hugh

yes me too please - my 98 2.8 TD GU has done 210,000 ks and it still seems to be OK, touch wood (head)!
It seems odd that your clutch has failed so early as 145,000 ks is not a lot for your truck.
Do you stop/start/live in a very hilly area and/or do a lot of heavy towing??

Hi Peter,

Further to my reply to Pete's previous question, we do tow a camper trailer a few times a year but pretty flat over here in WA. A lot of city driving but I take it easy on the gear changes, though no knowing what the person before me did (I've had the Patrol since 94,000km).

The clutch plate was knackered and I'm glad I changed it before the rivets damaged the flywheel. My mate Neil had a hard time loosening some of the bolts and from his feedback it looks like the clutch had been in since new.

Anyhow, all OK now. I doubt I'll be around for its next clutch.

Regards,
Hugh

Is this a weakness with this vehicle? I recently towed a broken down one (complete with camping trailer) way out in Central Qld a few weeks ago. Fortunately was in my OKA so no big deal. The local service people here say they've had quite a few.
