Hi, I have a 88 nissan patrol which has a factory fitted rear diff lock (vacumn operated i think) What i want to know is what is the trick to get it to disengage when you turn it off. Sometimes it will go off straight away and other times it hangs on for a long time then will suddenly go bang and dissengage. Also does this mean i dont have a limited slip diff. Any info appreciated

The factory diff lock is indeed vacuum operated. There is a two way solenoid that closes and then vents the locking mechanism and, if this is not working properly, it might be the cause of your problem.

The other possible cause can be due to the dog clutch simply being held locked by the torque caused when engaged and it can take a moment or two to relieve that torque and release. The fact that it does release, seems to indicate that the return spring is working (but that also could be slightly tired).

When you want to disengage, try reversing slowing after turning the diff lock off and listen for a click. A bit like disengaging auto hubs.

Check all of your lines and the solenoid to ensue nothing is wrong. A 1988 model is not a spring chicken and things do wear out.

Also, you don't have an LSD.

I have a factory locker in my 89 model and to get it to engage or disengage you need one wheel to turn faster or slower than the other. You can drive along in a straight line with the switch turned on and it wont lock till you turn the steering a bit. Same to disengage. As far as I know this is normal.
