Looking for advice/experiences on the CSR travelled this year. Thinking of doing it in 2005, in particular the side tracks off from the CSR itself.

Hi Mike

I didn't want to make comment on the recent track conditions as you requested as I haven't been down that way for a while(1994)

I did a solo run out to Helena Spring(David Carnegie 1896) from Well 42 which is around 180km return, and the highest dune on that track gave me a bit of trouble. The track, which was put in by Peter Vernon of Melbourne in 1990 was overgrown at that stage and difficult to find at stages, but I suspect it would be better worn by now. It was an interestting journey and I dug the native well out and brackish water seeped to the top. My missus become uncomfortable at being out there alone, and pushed me to return first thing the following morning which I did begrudgelingly. Next year I hope to have a look around the Calvert Hills south of Durba Spring but will not be doing a full Canning again. One was enough.

Take front and rear share shockies with you as I busted 2 brand new ones within the first few days doing a north/south journey. I broke some other parts due to the incessant hammering over the corrugations but was able to do my own repairs as the old FJ55 was just a basic truck and tie wire and bits did the trick :o).

You can have a look at my Canning diary on my website below. Go to 4x4 and then click on Canning.

Enjoy your Canning adventure.

A group of us did it north to south this year. There were lots of people on the track (July Aug).

We took 30 days and some members of the group saw every well and did all but one side track.

The corrugations were very hard on vehicles but no other issues at all really.

If / when I do it again I would put new Bilstein shocks and have complete suspension system checked prior to leaving. And also carry spare shocks. Six of the seven vehicles in our group had some sort of suspension problem. Two had NEW ARB shocks that only lasted to the third day before they were knackered. Once the shocks go then others things seem to suffer more and start to come loose, crack and fatigue.

Hi Mike

We travelled the CSR, south to north in June this year. It took us only 11 days and we stopped at all but 2 wells. We spent 2 nights at Durba and had set up camp by 3pm every other day, so I don't think you could say we were pushing it. I have a video of the trip and would be happy to send you a copy (beats paying for one)together with my diary extracts. I would have loved to have seen some video footage before our trip so that we could be best prepared for the trek but as it turned out, we were well prepared anyway. I made the video, not only as a record of our trip but also to assist others planning it also. I think it shows the track conditions, the endless sand dunes etc pretty well. My email address is mundy2@ozemail.com.au

Cheers

Mike,
at Easter we crossed it at Well 33, heading east to west. Jenkins track and Desert Rd from Kiwirrkurra. Then Kidson or Wapet Rd to beach.
