was there june last year.don't have my maps with me at the moment so I can't name the tracks/roads to take.Options are from what I understand are head north from Maryvale along the Old Ghan towards
Alice Springs.Approx 20-50kms the is a left turn which heads west, crosses the new Ghan and comes out on the Stewert Highway about 5-10kms south of Stewerts
Well.Or go south from Maryvale along the Old Ghan to Fink (approx 90kms very rough sand,it was in june 2003).follow signs west to Stewert Highway. The track from Maryvale to
Chambers Pillar was very rough at that time also.It took 2-3hrs to travel 40 or so kms.All these roads are on good maps(hema) so study a few different map companys to make sure you can see all possiblities.Have a good trip.

As Willem would say "click on the chambers piller icon on the bottom right of your screen and all will be revealed"

Was there in July this year. Out of Alice to Maryvale Station then to the Pillar. Combination of fast dirt and slow corrugations, took us just over 6 hours driving for the round trip. Then we went out to
Hermannsburg, onto the Mareenie Loop to Kings Canyon then Uluru and the Olgas. Worthwile doing
the Loop as it is planned for it to be blacktop by the end of 2007.

Peter,
We went the opposite way to you last year. Camped at the Uluru turn off on the highway the night before.
Left about 8:30 or 9:00 am and went to
Rainbow Valley. Had morning tea before we left there and went back to Stuarts
Well for cold drinks and lunch.
From there we went down to the Hugh River Stock Route and headed west towards the Old Gahn, then south to Maryvale and into Chambers. We arrived at about 4:30pm from memory. Just time to set up
camp and have a walk out to view the sunset on the Pillar.
It was a pretty full day and we slept
well that night despite the heat, but
well worth it
Hugh River S/R was really pretty. Most of it is quite
well made road and travelling at around 80km/h was not too taxing. Just near the railway line (new) the S/R is in or nearly in the river bed and it is beautiful. Some lovely spots to stop and rest, not sure about
camping, need to check with staion owner.
Also if you ring the roadhouse at the Uluru turn off (wish I could remember the name of it) they may put you in touch with the station owner whose property borders
Chambers Pillar. He has in the past offered a tag-along service to take you directly from C.P. to the highway. Saves a heap of time and is apparently very pretty and informative.
I'm jealous again
Duncs.

Reckon it might be Idracowra Station that offers the tag along back to the highway. from memory Idracowra backs onto Maryvale&
Chambers Pillar, which was discovered on April 6th, 1860 by John McDouall Stuart (note spelling of Stuart)

Happy to send you a PLT file if you want - however we went south from Alice to Maryvale to Chambers, back the Maryvale then south down the old Ghan, Mt Dare etc.
We were there in Sep this year road was pretty good 3 Hrs Alice to Chambers averaging between 50-90kph to Maryvale and 10-50kph into Chambers.
Theres a bit more info on my website - click on my profile for a link.
