Just come back from a 4 day trip (a bit wet) around the Wyperfeld NP, BD Wilderness and
Border Track.
One of the trippers had a recent model Hilux with the Automatic Disengaging Differential?? ADD Hubs.
The button on the dash was pushed and the light didn't come on. We tried all the things that they say in the book but didn't have any luck getting them to engage.
It probably hasn't been in 4wd for a while and I have heard of problems in these before but don't really understand enough about how they work or why they fail.
A google search hasn't shed much light. Can anyone either explain how they work and the likely problem, or point to a good web link that will please??
By the way, luckily it rained and the sand was a bit firmer, bloody amazing where a 2wd Hilux with 18psi in the tyres can go if you drive it like you stole it. Left a few "four wheel drives" behind to be snatched.
I think we only snatched it twice!
Thanks in advance for any help forthcoming.

The link below will take you to an american site all about Toyota ADD's. Be aware of differences in location of some components. Left hand drive vehicles are used in the descriptions.

Will it ( the diff ) lock up if low range is selected?
Check the connecting plug at the rear of the gear box for corrosion

Tried that out on the track.
Transfer case is engaging drive to front drive shaft but no light on dash and no drive to front rubber.

If the ADD system fails there is an emergency engagement procedure. There are two methods depending if the actuator diaphragm is working or not. All hilux owners with ADD should familiarise themselves with this.

According to the manual this is to either accelerate or decelerate in a straight line while turning 4wd on and off....and it didn't work.
Got any other ideas.
Four fifths of useless in the middle of nowhere. What we needed was to know how to lock it up manually and there was nothing I could find in the manual to tell you how to do it.
I like my Courier. All manual. No problem.

That is not the emergency procedure described in the gregorys manual. It involves disconnecting a vacuum line and connecting it somewhere else and disconnecting some other line. If the actuator is stuffed you have to plug a line and depress the centre of the actuator with a screwdriver. I'm not 100% clued up on it as not having ADD I only glanced over it. When I have a bit more time (due at work very soon) I'll type it out and post. There's 3 or 4 very helpful ADD pages in the gregorys manual.

Good question, I'm at home so I'm on Broadband.
Only at the
Ambulance Station do I have to put up with poxy dial up rates. The system's stuffed when you have better net access at home than for a government department....
Thanks very much.

Hi Leigh, hope you've got the order in for the new vehicle. You can sit back now and dream for a few months eh. You wont have much time to prepare for the Canning trip.
Yeah all is
well, still alive, got a job, roof over my head, 2 vehicles in the driveway, food in our tummys, happy family. Not as much as some but a lot more than some poor buggers in this world.
sunny side up
cheers

I had the same problem and was stuck in the bush. I realised after pulling my hair out for a half hour that after some maintenance work the mechanic had put the 2 little vacuum hoses back onto the wrong pipes. When I swapped them over it fixed it strait away and the 4WD light came on instantly. I had some mechanical work done that had the hoses off.
The hoses are located close to the front of the engine on the drivers side. They are both on little aluminium pipes and go down towards the front diff. Just swap them over and see if it works.
If lower maintenance was done they could be on the wrong pipes at the diff end.

You just can't trust some of these guys. When I had some top end work done on my old Rodeo I had all kinds of minor problems caused by vacuum hoses connected incorrectly. In the end I sorted out it myself with help from the workshop manual.
