G'day All,
After the great advice I got regarding purchasing my next fourbie. I now have a mate who is interested in buying one. He will definately not be using it as a hard-core 4wd, however he would like something that can do the following: Carry passengers in comfort, carry a bit of gear in the back (loves his woodwork), do a bit of 4WD (mainly sand and dune work I'd suggest) and maybe tow a small boat in the future.
He is fairly dead set on getting a petrol, and I think his budget is about $15K plus or minus. At this stage he is looking at the following vehicles: Pathfinder, Jackeroo, ForeRunner, Rodeo, Hilux or Prado. As I said he is certain about the pertol thing, as this will suit his need most of all. A Patrol or Cruiser is likely to be too big for him, and he wont need something of their ability.
If anyone can offer some advice or provide some detail/comments/experience with any of these vehicles I'd appreciate it. Things like reliability, cost of service, feul economy would be greatly appreciated.
After all the advice I got and all the advice I'm sure he will get, we will both be fully fledged members before you know it.
Cheers in advance
Jono

If he wants to carry passengers in comfort then ditch the dual cab idea. Any wagon with the seats folded down and a roof rack could carry his wood working gear.
I've been looking at Prados recently and he won't be getting one of those for $15k.
Probably get an early 90's Jackaroo, Pathfinder or Foreunner for that money at a guess.

Put a Mitsubishi Pajero on the list. Value for money they are a real good buy for the use your mate wants to put it to.

If your looking at those , might as
well look at a Petrol Pajero as
well.
Doubt you will find a prado for that sort of money (or one worth looking at).
Not sure I would wont to go that early with the Pathfinder (the later ones are pretty good except fuel economy & fuel capacity). 4Runner/Hilux , are much the same. the V6 is pretty thirsty.
Might be worth sussing out a Petrol Patrol. They aren't as big to drive as they appear. They ARE pretty thirsty (actually very thirsty).
My pick would be to find a good Jackaroo , or Pajero.

for that kind of money i would be looking at a jackeroo
i had a 98 model se petrol and i believe they are a much underated vehicle servicing costs were OK with parts on parr with others, it went very
well and cruised in comfort we also towed an off road CT and boat ( not at the same time )
with no problems the vehicle was also
well appointed with air bags and such all in all a good vehicle.
Mind you i would not go back to it after driving a nissan patrol for the last 2 years

What about a Holden Frontera?
I have 99 'S' model and can do all of the above in flying colurs (as i'm sure other Frontera owners will concur!~)
