Following the birth of our first child, my 1998 3.0L single cab has to go. I am sorry to see it leave as it has been super reliable and has not let me down mechanically at all. We are working on a limited budget and don't have the cash for a 1998 or newer diesel dual cab.

Anyway.... I have managed to track a 1989 dual cab Hilux with the following:

2.8 diesel
320 000 kms
'new' DTS Turbo (< 10k ago)
'new' Reco gearbox (less than 1 month old)
Front and rear bullbar
canopy
snorkel
'new' 31" AT's (<10k)
reco diff
Koni shockers
1 year rego.
twine shower
dual battery solenoid

He is asking $14k.

The rig looks great and is cosmetically in good order. My only concerns are the high milage and age of the vehicle. Apparently the oil has been regularly changed (every 5k). So forumites, is this a good deal. Is he asking too much for the age and high milage of the vehicle. Your advice would be most appreciated.

Best regards,

Bogged Again.

My view is , the price is too high.

2ndly , K's are relative. On a diesel , the K's are less relevant as long as its been serviced correctly , however , other things wear out (gearbox diffs etc). It would seem though , these may have been changed.

Fitting a Turbo is NOT a great idea , unless the Motor is in good condition. As it was fitted not so long ago . . . he should have no trouble telling you who did it , and talk to them.

If it was professionally fitted , and motor was checked out before install , not a big deal.

If it was a backyard install , I would be walking away.

Hi Bogged Again

In April last year, I purchased from a dealer a 97 Dual Cab Hi lux 2.8 diesel for $18k.
Had 125000 k on the clock, canopy, extractors,Bullbar and CD. Dual Battery cost me $200.
Turbo would be nice but not necessary.
Check the Red Book on the net.

Yeah way high but some dealers price the turbos like that and will continue to do so when suckers pay the crazy price, and they do.

Hi Bogged Again

Sorry to say it, but it sounds too high. Sounds like they are trying to get you to pay for all of the accessories that have been fitted to re-coup some of the $$ spent. In the end it is a 15 year old 4wd with 320k's on the clock. around $14-$15K should expect to something like 1993 - 1994 with less or around 200kms.
Godd luck mate

Sounds way too high - and need to ask why selling so soon after fitting the turbo.

I'd be very wary of any diesel that's done that number of km. The HiLux donk has a very good reputation for long life - but they cost a packet to rebuild.

I'd be loooking for a 1996-1998 2.8 litre. You should get a good one for about $14,000 - $16,000.

Redbook quotes a price of between $7000 - $9600 for private sale. Add a couple of grand for the accessories and you are still paying way too much.

Way too much for the hilux. If you do buy a 2.8 no matter what the k's, CHANGE THE BEARINGS it is cheaper than rooting the crank..common problem.
I just picked up a 1996 80series converted to a dual cab, 50mm body lift 3' suspension lift all GXL goodies winch bar etc for $17,500 with 181000km.

Thanks for the advice gang. I see that the general consensus is that he is asking way too many $ for the rig, despite the add-ons.

I also got the feeling that he was trying to recoup some of the dollars he had pumped into the unit i.e. turbo, reco gbox, hd clutch etc. My thoughts are that the seller is worried of his financial committment from these mods, and doesn't to sell the car at too much of a loss.

If he won't budge on price i.e. ~$11k mark, then I'll walk.

Best regards and thanks for your advice.

sorry missed that it was a single cab. I had a baby seat in my single cab. You just get this little thingy that attaches behind the seat. Only problem is that it puts the adult passenger in the middle. Not good if you have bucket seats. I had a bench and we could do it.
