Hi all as you know i have been shelling out some cash on the jackaroo lately and boy what a transformation, from 'shopping rocket' to 'mud flyer'. ( yeah i know i'm kidding myself so no smart A.. comments !!)

First the lifted new suspension, full EFS kit (coils torsion bars and shocks) rides totally different from the stock 'sponge' can't wait to load her up and do some fast dirt, have done some fast dirt and rough off road empty and it is a little stiff , but excellent. Has now settled down slightly.

Secondly tyres, got the new 265/75/16 MTR's fitted and geez you sure notice the heavier construction compared to the 693 bridgestone's i had, it is slower due to the increased diameter, but the heavy construction caused a fair increase in the inertia load to accellerate on the road, hope the economy doesn't fly out the window.. Not real noisy either, normal bitchy slight noise when cornering, 'glassy' surface road it gets a sing going at 100 - 110, but turn on the radio and you wouldn't know you were on 'tough' tyres. Couldn't help myself and within 20k of fitting i was giving it hell down a black clay track with some fair size bog holes, holy cow !! it just powered through and didn't look like slowing down, i would never had even tried these holes with the old tyres....

So some of you wondered about the measurements i have - here we go.

From the top edge of the rim at the base of the wheel to the guard lip- front 755 mm - rear 760mm.
Ground clearance to the sill lip 440mm, Bash plate on trans case 280mm, trans drain plug 290mm
Roof height 1.88m no racks, 2.0m with the 'rola' racks i currently have.

With all this and the winch bar with 4 spotties on it now, i reckon it looks close to a 'real' 4wd :-))

Cheers from a wrapt but broke Brad

sorry mate no digi camera, toni's brother is back from wa next month and he has a sony digi job, so i will grab a heap of shots then.

Just close your eyes, imagine a white jackaroo with black arb winch bar 2 spots on the bar mounts, 2 spreads on the aerial tabs on the top bar, sitting up nicely on chunko tyres, mmmm . sweet.... taller than a standard patrol/cruiser, but a bit shy of yours !!!

Forgot to say , no clearance probs with the tyres on the standard track but there is only about half an inch to the front sway bar on full lock.

Oh and i went through one of the overhead speed checkers on the Hume fwy. Yep 6% slow on the dial, just like yours, i'll just keep 5 k's less on the dial and it will be sweet. Have to watch the car-park overhead clearance now, bang bang, scrape scrape, cry cry...

oh yeh the car parks.... got to watch them, had to go to the hilton they other day and park underneath, almost had to let the tryes down. I have a tall AM CB aerial, if it touches I am in trouble. With the roof racks on, I dont even bother trying. Cheers Ad

Just typed a huge reply and lost it, anyway I have a 99TDJack and white at that. Interested how much you paid for the lift, and eventually what happened to your fuel economy. Thought about an aux tank under the drivers side - 65L apparently for $1000 (would make a Simpson crossing much easier).

Well done, sounds like you have made a very comfortable car into a very capable 4wd. Tell us more when you do more.

Do the tank, I just got 930kms out of my petrol jack and love not having to fill up as regularly. Diesel would much better.

full kit $1300 supplied and fitted. Fuel economy - unknown as yet, but the mtr's will knock it about a bit for sure.
I got quoted $1200 for an aux tank at the Melb 4x4 show, bugger that, going to start looking under some small cars for options, should be able to find a small 45-50 L tank rectangular shape with the fuel pump unit built in for about $200 at a wrecker, plumb up a seperate fill pipe, then just flick a switch and pump it through to the main tank when needed. Easy to make the mounts etc. and the black placcy tanks dont split like some of the aftermarket jobbies.

Fuel economy ... grumble, grumble (brad & jackablue know what I'm on about ... btw, I think I know what happened last week)

Brad ... Have you looked at the fuel tanks that Bias Boating warehouse sells? Stainless tanks from $269 for a 40L to $489 for a 80L. Plastic 50L for $219 and 75L for $229. Not sure that they'd be tough enough for going wheeling though. I've got their catalog in front of me and there's a lot of useful stuff for 4WD'ing at good prices.

You can check them out here.

good one brad. Having a good measure of air underneath makes life in the bush a lot more pleasant. I'm still wrapt with the Lux after struggling with the Rodeo.
