Hi guys,
Was looking at the NAVRA site and was wondering what you guys reccomment to replace the standared headlights with. I see they have a 100/55w kit available. Is there any others out there that have a slightly brighter low beam or do they make a hell of a difference compared to the flimsy std ones i have now. Any advice will be appreciated
chers Ange

maybe can look at narva 50plus globes as aparently no more current draw
with 100/55w globes may need to upgrade wiring
just something to ask about
im sure someone else can provide definite answers though

G'day Ange,
There was a pretty lengthy discussion on this that I started not too long ago on post id 17696.
I've just recently put Narva +50's in my car. A few facts for you: The Narva globes are actually made by Osram, which supply most of the standard globes in cars. The ones that came out of my Rodeo were Philips globes and the general perception is that Philips globes are better than Osram globes watt for watt.
The +50's I put in have made the light slightly whiter and more defined so therefore I would say they are slightly better, but not much better.
If you put lights in at more than the 60/55W standard globes, you run the risk of damage to many parts of your car including the light assembly and electronics. Quite simply, putting in a 100W globe is almost doubling the draw of a 55W globe. There will be plenty of people that will say they have done it, but I wasn't prepared to risk putting them in a new car where everything is manufactured to the "bare minimum" so to speak.
Putting in greater than standard globes will also potentially void any warranty you may have and potentially make your car unroadworthy and this potentially uninsured. Not saying all this to scare you, just to pass on what I just recently went through.
I would recommend getting a pair of Philips 50+ globes and putting them in. It's a cheap upgrade with no risk. (For the record, Osram also make the Hella H3, H4 and H7 globes).
Hope some of this helps.
Cheers,
Smocky.

Hi Smocky,
Any idea who makes the Bosh + 50 globes. I bought a set a few years ago. Love them - curious to know who makes them.
Cheers,
Glenno.

Replaced my GQ lights with the Hella inserts and 100/90 bulbs. Pretty cheap and made a huge difference, you won't believe the difference. Also put in a relay and up graded the wiring. Not really that hard, takes a couple of hours and cost then was about $130 for the lot, damn cheap for the lens as
well hate to see what it would cost for a GU.

I got a pair for my GQ from a 4wd place in
Adelaide called "goannanywhere" or something like that (sorry for lack of info on that) Have the symbol of a goanna for the company. Anyway for $100 I made a huge difference with the lighting and did not have to upgrade the wiring. The guy said that the wiring in the GQ was already very good. I now have 100/80 and very impressed with the brightness. Don't think it's necessary to have the extra expense of wiring etc.

We had a Narva Rep come to our last club meeting. He said that the higher wattage replacement bulbs could only be used in glass headlights. The +50 type bulbs (any that are supposed to be better without increasing wattage) are designed for the plastic type headlights (I think he said GU were plastic). They make the light whiter or somehow better but not actually brighter.
So basically he said the +50 bulbs are better than standard and the best you can do for plastic headlights but not as good as a higher wattage bulb.
He also said that anything other than the 60/55w (which is standard I think) is illegal.
He didn't have time to go into the headlight replacements (he was mainy talking about spotlights) but I would imagine they would be better than standard ones.
I'm going to be getting some replacement headlights and bulbs shortly.
I would think to be on the safe side the wiring upgrade should also be done. Even if nothing gets fried if you don't do it, surely there would be a voltage drop which would negate some of the increases you're chasing.

I'm running 180\75 in the terrano with the standard relays . the terrano has the jap spec high and low beam relays that the australain models didnt get. Talk about turning night into day. I dont need spotties.

Did you say 180/75??
with 180 watts of high beam you certainly won't be 'theshadows' any longer.
Any small animals which get in your way will be vapourised
well before you get near them!

They do tend to destroy the reflectors, not to menton go to be really carful not to leave the lghts on for more than 5 minutes.
Its a shame that the big companies dont bring in the large sizes anymore. If you look around you still can get them or order them in from the taiwan.
Mine are "Autolamp" made in taiwan the reality is they properby no better than a 150\75 unit from europe.

Shadow,
Wow..... 180/75. That's impressive.
How do they destroy the reflectors? Or jow long will they last before they need to be replaced.
At the moment the lights on my torrano are just slightly brighter then a candle, so I was looking to upgrade the whole wiring etc.
I feel much better now knowing that I don't need to do that.
R.
