Do you mean the best turbo to put on your 80seriees 1hz or a complete turbo diesal? I guess the best toyota turbo diesal at the moment is the one in the 100s (1hd-fte I think) To get one of these fitted to your 80 you would be talking big money and it may even be cheaper to it a brunswick td v8. The td fitted to the 80 series (I forget its deignation ) would be the best option for a straightforward fit but I dare say there will be plenty of xtra nick nacks that would set you back. Also this motor was not up to toyotas standards for reliability and was pulled from the market. The td from the 60serios (12ht)was a beuty although it now pales against the modern tds. Vast diferences in drivelines would make fitting one of these a problem. As for fitting other makes of td - get your wallet out.

ok then adding a turbo the motor is not a good cost option, i have been told about tuned extractors that give almost as much power as a turbo is this true??

adding a turbo to your existing donk would be ok, certainly your cheapest easiest option - plenty of people do it I personally would have a few reservations as these motors were not originally built to take a turbo. you would want to make sure your donk is ok in the first place. Extractors will help but not to a significant point

OK
Just fitted my turbo to my 80 series last week.
Back ground info first.
12/92 Gxl natural 1hz diesel 273 000 km.
I suggest you get a compression test done on the engine first and then get the injector pressures checked and nozzles serviced or replaced first. I suggest while its at the diesel man get the top seals in the pump replaced along with the throttle shaft seal and shaft as well. The low sulpur diesel has a habit of causing fuel leaks on older models so why not get it done at the same time. (preventative maintenance)
I fitted my kit my self as I am a mechanic who has my own business.
Give one of the sponsors of this site a call Denco as this is the kit I fitted. Its usual retail price is around $3100 including a full exhaust system. It will cost you about $500 bucks roughly to fit depending on how they fit the oil drain. Some places just drill a hole in the sump and screw in a fitting. The best way is to remove the sump and braise in the fitting. Thats probably one of the biggest parts of the job along with fitting the damn exhaust. If you want to email me through my business site I can snap some photos of mine to send you or answer any further questions you have. I probably wouldn't put an intercooler on an older engine, don't want to overstress it and keep your boost under 7lb. The Denco kit will be preset and just pushes 7lb.

Best of luck

Plenty of info around on this Ive got a feeling it starts at about 3,500 to 6,000 for turbo and intercooler. As said previosly make sure your donk is good as putting a turbo onto a tired motor to power it up will just kill it

I seem to remember there was a diesel place up here that quoted around $3500 for a complete turbo installation on the 80-series atmo 4.2.....
