Hi all, just after some advice. I own a 94 GQ td42, love the car and am really impressed with it so far. The problem is I think I need the gearbox rebuilt(not really impressed with this part of it). Does anyone know a good place in SE Melbourne to do this job and an approx cost. Also is there change over boxes available and what do people think of these?

I was at Southern 4x4 dismatlers recently and they have heaps of these boxes and mainly because they dont break. I think the guy said they were around 2k for a box. Cruisers were 4k cause apparently they do break....Just another option for you.

Wreckers always offer some sort of warranty. 30, 60 90 days.

Then car has usual GQ vibrations, but apart from that at 800-1200 revs it has a more metalic sounding vibration that is isolated when the clutch is depressed. This then leads too vibrations from then too 2000 revs which aren't as severe but still not normal. As well as this it has a stuffed bearing sound to it. I have a new clutch in that has been check so that is ok. One person I had look at it said it sounded to him like the first imput shaft bearing. The car has done 225000 klms with a couple of trips to central Australia included. I am going to get the tail shaft checked and if needed balanced but I don't think this will be it. I hope this makes sense because it is hard to explain. Thanks for the replies.

Draff, Because you say you are getting the tailshaft checked, I assume that this is when the car is moving and not just reving the engine out of gear (out of gear would still effect the first imput shaft). This may sound really strange but try disconnecting the speedo cable at the gearbox. I have heard the sound they can make and you would swear the gearbox is about to come through the floor. I also know of people rebuilding the gearbox, replacing unijoints, wheelbearings and it all came back to the vibrations of a stuffed speedo cable. Oil shouldn't leak out as you drive with it disconnected and for the time involved its worth a try. Again I know this sounds strange, but have a look there before you spend any money

Had an 89 GQ for many years and it had what was referred to a gear rollover. An annoying rumbling/bearing sound from the gearbox all the time in neutral. Service guys said don't worry about it it. Friend now has the car and it still makes the noise but is still going strong.

GQ gearboxes are as bulletproof as they get- but I guess that if you don't know it's history- who knows what has happened to it??
Have you tried fresh oil, say VMX 80 or a good synthetic?
Try to get a number of opinions before you commit to anything.
Cheers

As you said you can't be sure of the history and what has happened and accasionally even the good things can break. I have tried the oil and have VMX 80 in it at the moment and there is no significant difference.

Thanks for the tip, I will try the speedo cable as there is nothing to lose. Im sorry I did leave this bit out. When the car is in neutral and the clutch is out there is an abnormal sound that is faint to hear but does sound like a bearing not right. When you bring the revs up the sound of the engine is too loud to be able to hear it. If it was the first input shaft bearing I would assume that when there is a load on it, it would react alot worse than just spinning itself resulting in vibration. Would this be correct?

G'day Draff,

If you thought the idea of the speedo cable causing the noise sounded a bit far fetched, I have an even weirder possible cause......the body mounts!! Once they wear or get sort of "squashed", the body can make some very strange noises as it vibrates against the chassis at certain revs. Probably not the cause, but worth a look anyway with that many klm's on the clock.

Good luck.....I'd be surprised if 225,000klm had ANY effect on the gearbox, unless it was abused by running with no oil or something like that; those gearboxes are just SO over-engineered it's beyond belief.

Unfortunnatly it wont be speedo cable GQ s dont have a speedo cable(have a sensor pick up then transferred to the speedo by electrial wire)

Has your mechanic gone over the car with a mechanics stethiscope?
Use of this tool will easily determine where the noise/vibration is coming from.
You just can't do it by ear alone.

Hope this saves you some money.
