I have an '88 Toyota 4 Runner automatic. I bought this in April this year and about a couple of weeks after I purchased it I noticed it would intermittently 'skip' second gear, so from 1st it would jump into third gear. I have had a transmission place have a look at it, and he said it is not gearbox but electrical. So I took it to an electrician and he said it didn't play up (which I think he must not have wanted to bother with it, because it plays up every day). Anyhow it is getting worse, now going into overdrive when the overdrive button is not on- I went up a slow rising
hill yesterday at 20 km's because it wouldn't go back into 2nd- sometimes it snaps into first and revs very high to compensate!!
Very frustrating as I cannot get an answer about the 'problem' so I can't get it fixed.
I hope someone can help me, or if anyone has heard of something like this before- I'm in
Melbourne.

Hi, just when in drive- but if I try to put it in 2nd from drive it usually goes into 1st. It used to only do this when cold so when warm it would run ok- now it is most of the time. Only sometimes when on a trip it will drive normal.
Thanks :)

They were a fairly advanced box for their time lots of electrics, limp home mode, traction mode for snow. Without being a tranny guru I would lean towards a crook or worn sensor unless it has electronic kickdown instead of a cable. If that is the case the sensor on that may be faulty making gear changes go everywhere.
good luck

Well thank you- I will let a friend know who is a mechanic, we'll try that option. It never played up for him though, typical!
