Back on the subject of tyres, after much talking with people on tyre choice I decided to go with BFG T.A for the Nissan. So down to the local dealers to get the best price I now find out it is near impossible to get them made in USA.And the Japan or Malaysian made are not as good on wear. So I'm now looking at Mickey Thompson MTX. Has anybody had any good, bad or indifferent comments on them.
I do about 10-15% off road use.

Why not go to a place and say "If you can get me USA BFG A/T tyres I'll buy them otherwise bye bye". I'm sure they would at least try then.

Hi

Me & 2 others went to the North Simpson earlier this year. We all had tyres less than 1 month old. Vehicles were similar with similar loads. We each had a different set of tyres. Mickey Thompson MTX - Ruined. Cooper ST - Ruined. Goodyear MT/R - Still on car & going good.

I believe that the Mickey Thompson's are made by Cooper's. I had a set of Cooper ST/C a while back - Ruined in 6000 km. I have also had BFG AT ruined in 20000 km - they were the USA ones.
Cheers

David,

I hope you were the owner of the MT/Rs.

Could you please give some more information on what you mean by "ruined"? Was there sidewalls staked, chipping, lugs ripped off?

Cheers

HI

All of the above ....
I was the owner of the MT/R's, only had them about a month before the trip when they replaced a set of Cooper ST/C's that were torn apart after 6000 km.
The Cooper's never suffered a puncture, but were so badly chipped and had so many lugs ripped off that they looked like they were bald.
The Mickey Thompson's suffered the same fate as the cooper's, but also suffered from punctures.
The MT/R's came back pitted a bit, but no punctures, no chipping and no lugs ripped off.
Bear in mind that we drove the worst tracks possible, with a lot of weight and at reasonable speed at times. In the North Simpson, there are no tracks so to speak.

Thanks David,

I have had similar problems with my Cooper STs i.e. chipping, lugs ripped off, and I am currently waiting for the Cooper Rep to return from the USA to check them out. Did the person with the Coopers speak to any of the reps about their performance?

Out of interest what tyre pressure were the members of your group generally runnning?

Regards

I had the Cooper rep look at mine. He bought them back off me. Told me that the Cooper STT would not do that - it is a much tougher tyre than the ST or ST/C.
I bailed on Cooper at that point & tried the MT/R.
The guy with the Cooper's on the last trip, also had many vehicle problems (it just fell apart, even though it was only 2 years old) and sold the 4by a couple of weeks after we got back, with the Cooper's still on it.
Bought himself a real 4by with MT/R's.
