Hi all, I'm looking at picking up an 89 2.5TD Pajero and am looking for your thoughts and experience with this car; good, bad and indifferent. Whilst my off-road uses are not extreme, I would like a car that has the capability to take us (family of 4 and a couple of dogs) to new
places in this great country of ours! Therefore reliability, comfort and cost of ownership are important to me.
I have noticed that you can pick up Japanese imports with low Km's (eg 100K) for around the $6-7k mark. Is this too good to be true or is there a catch?
Thanks in advance for your help.

I have a 91 2.5td Triton with 240,000kms. Its very economical driven sensibility & uses no oil or
water after a 10,000kms FNQ trip.
Weakness is the gearbox in 5th gear in particular. Having said this avoiding heavy lugging in 5th is wise and they usually start whining
well before they go.
Mine had new bearing kit & clutch at 160,000 & is fine at 240,000. Still has original brakes all round (country car) but rear is on the way out.
Performance can be increased with a few simple & cheap mods too.
Have a look at pajeroclub.com.au & outerlimits 4X4 .com for more.

I had a 2.2(?) TD Paj, 87 model and it spat 5th gear also at around 130000 km but it was economical to drive and pretty capable offroad, if driven properly. For your needs it sounds like a good match.

Provided the vehicle checks out mechanically , they aren't a bad beast.
My 1990 (V6) has rarely been stopped.
