Evening all.
Can any one tell me where the gearbox & transfer breathers are on an 84 hilux diesel (5speed).
I removed the panel on the floor under the console, but nothing there, my manual does'ent have any pics of it, and I can't see anything obvious on the sides.
I changed the oil today and it had the old tell tale glug glug that
you get when the air can't get in quick enough to replace the oil, removing the filler plug stops this of coarse.
Hope somone can point me in the right direction.
Thanks in advance,
Nomad.

I had an 84 4runner,Ithink it might be closer to transfer case, can't really remember. The breather's construction is ametal cap clipped over the fitting, inside is a rubber disc held down onto the fitting by a spring.the design I believe is to let the out as it heats up,but to keep water out on rapid cooling.I have just looked at my work
shop manual and it doesn't show a breather any where on the box or transfer case.So what you have experienced is normal, even if it had a breather it would do the same thing. The diffs will have breathers of the same construction as above

Thanks fellas, I think that the breathing through the stick is probably right, there is nothing resembling a conventional breather on top of the box.
The diff breathers are ok, I've extended them up under the bonnet, as is the standard practice, and they breath fine, my concern is, that when I took the drain plug out of my hot transmition, it had preasure in it.
Can only be a blocked breather, wish I could see one out of the car.

Being a mechanic,I haven't found very many 2wd cars with breathers on the transmissions. They wil build up pressure when hot, possibly upto 5psi.They will also do the glug glug until you remove the filler plug.I have been thinking during the day and I am pretty confident that the box or transfer don't have a conventional breather, because I went looking for them to raise their hieght. All the best
