I am generally happy with my Terrano II, although not at the moment as I split the radiator and have just finished fitting a new one.
They are quite good on the juice (10L/100k) there abouts, and I find it comfortable to drive and not too big. Lots of parts are common with older pathfinders and Navaras so you can avoid dealer prices for a lot of things if you look around.
Mine goes
well but there are a few that don't, mainly because the guys that service them find it quicker to replace parts than track down underling problems. I take
mine off road and tow a boat occasionaly.
For a 99 model $20000 sounds about right, but if you push them you should be able to get some change.
A jackeroo is also a good vehicle.

Mine never moved from the bottom 1/3 of the gauge unless it was working realy hard until I fitted a bullbar. Now up till about 80 it sits in the bottom 1/3 then up to 1/2 when doing 100. a few weeks ago I fitted a new thermostat and that made no difference. Today I fitted a brand new radiator and it is still the same.
The temp has only once gone above 2/3 on the gauge even when towing a boat from N Qld in the Christmas holidays. The only time I boiled it I was on
Stockton beach in 40 deg heat, which was stupid.
I am guessing that if it was running that warm on a day like today, that one would struggle when the temp gets up in summer. It might need a new fan clutch (have to replace the waterpump to do it $300) or have the radiator cleaned or worse recored (not much change from $600).
Quite frankly if it is running hot on a day that isn't particuarly warm, keep looking.

Hey WestBob, I will be interested to see what replies you get, as I am looking for exactly the same type of vehicle for my wife.

Was just talking to my sister last night, They have a TD jack probably about 98-99. It gets some use being in a 4x4 club but it also does mums taxi stuff. Very happy with it no problems. Probably a very underrated vehicle (read good 2nd hand buy)

A Jack or a Pajero would be worth looking at for that.
Is there a real need for a Diesel ?
Diesels aren't so good for "running around". It could be thats what you need , but I would be looking at costing for running both Diesel and Petrol (of the Jackaroo , or Pajero Variety). It might surprise you. There are more to costs then just the Fuel price.

i thought of both just havent had a chance to test drive. i drove a disco and a nissan terrano td dissapointed in th performance of both but my work car is a navara d/cab 3.0 td 2004 and they do go
well. as for the diesel question i am a farm manager an i get all my diesel for free, so that really cuts the cost for me, and living 80ks to a major town really suits a diesel cheers Bob
