Wire size

OK I knew I needed decent size wire for my dual batt setup, have read in the past about the 4 and 6 sqaure mm wire, are we talking about the area of the cut surface. The wire I got is 4mm across the cut surface(copper only , not including insulation)... I did nearly fail math at school but I reckon this gives me 12.56 square mm... My question is: Am I an idiot or is this wire plenty good enough?

Funny you should mention this as I came across an article while researching Anderson plugs a couple of hours ago on wire size confusion http://www.fridge-and-solar.net/wire.html
I ended up ordering the book as it seems to have lots of interesting articles on 12v stuff. http://www.caravanandmotorhomebooks.com/books/motorhome_electrics_caravans_too.htm

AWG; B&S; Auto etc etc!!!!!!

Blue, your math agrees with mine. I suppose it depends what you are doing when you say "my dual batt setup"
I've used about 5 mm dia cable (could be 6mm) between earth and the second battery and the same between the second battery positive and smart isolator and again to the main batterry.
The cable I have run to the rear mounted Anderson plug and rear accessory outlet is about 4 mm conductor diameter, - Suitably fused of course. I also have a 70A resettable Circuit Breaker in the circuit so that I can isolate the exposed Anderson plug.

The biggest "trap" is auto cable - 6 mm Auto is NOT a 6 mm crossectional area. The best thing to do IMHO is to do exactly what you have done and measure the conductor diameter. Having said that you do have to have some regard for the insulation.

4mm diameter is BIG cable. It'll do the job well, and the thing to remember is never go too small here.

Auto cable is a huge trap.

There are no direct comparisons as the stuff varies from maker to maker but roughly:

2 mm autocable is about 0.3 sq mm; 3 mm autocable is about 1.2 sq mm; 4 autocable is 1.8 sq mm - but some is 2.0 sq mm; and 6 mm autocable is about 4.6 sq mm.

When fridge makers etc specify cable they are always speaking of sq mm unless they say otherwise.

To convert copper diameter to sq mm:

1/2 diameter squared x 3.14

Thus 6 mm diameter is 3 X 3 X 3.14 sq mm. That is about 28 sq mm.

4 mm diamater is 2 x2 X 3.14. That is about 12.5 sq mm. Big but by no means overkill for the job.

Be aware that most 12 volt fridges are incorrectly connected. They mostly have 4.00 auto cable in the mistaken believe that this is the 4 sq mm typically specified. Asa a result they often have over twice the maximum acceptable voltage drop. For that job even 8 sq mm is not overkill. It's also known as 8 gauge, 8 B&S, and 8AWG - all are close to 8 sq mm.

The material referred to on Val Rigoli's Fridge and Solar site is republished there (under express permission) from my own site. Waeco often refer customers to this article.

As I've heard that too big is never too big and the second batt is in the tub utilising about 4.5m of cable, I bought the biggest stuff they had.
Thanks to all who responded, I feel better now.
