I have owned a couple of 12 foot tinnies previously but want something a little better. I intend using it mainly in smooth
water in many states. I intend travelling over the next few years in between working when I have to. I have no idea which boat to buy for two people to have safety and comfort, in estuaries, around headlands etc. Something that will take the knocks and bangs of off road travel, limited washing with fresh
water for weeks on end and safe in remote areas. Don't want anything huge, what do you think, 14 foot with a 30 yamaha?????????? What size, brand etc do you recommend?

Hi, just a couple of questions. How do you want to carry the boat? On the roof of the car, on a trailer or upside down on a camper trailer? I would be a bit worried about how far I have to carry a 30hp motor if it is separate from the boat.

Sorry, should have said. I'll tow it on a heavy duty boat trailer.

I like the Quintrex's.
Hornet 400 or 435 trophy.
30 hp.
Stacer also make a decent boat , but never used one personally.

We have a Quintrex 400 Trophy with 30hp Yammie. Love it for estuary & close inshore work. Extremely stable due to the hull design and also good at a fast clip giving a nice soft ride. It is a compromise between a flat bottom punt and a deep v and it does it very
well.
Stacer is also a good boat as it is from the same factory as Quintrex, I believe Stacer are superceded Quintrex models.
For extensive travelling, have you looked at the fold up boat. I wish I had seen them prior to getting the Quinnie as they are ideal for a caravanner. see it here
You only need a 5hp motor to get the same performance as a 30hp on a tinnie.
Regards
Neil.

Hi Austravel
We have a 3.9m Stessl, edged V with a 30hp, awesome boat, rides very smooth and plains easily, I would also have to agree on the posts above, the Quintrex throphy would be ideal for the uses you have stated and they are a very stable boat. I would look at a 20ph honda four stroke if you are mainly doing fishing in the estuaries as the are very quiet.
cheers
Crazie

Apart from being quiet, you'll also find yourself having to carry less fuel, like about half at least. The Honda is sooooo economical.

G'day Austravel. I've also been looking into something a bit more substantial than my old cartopper as the fishing bug has bitten a bit harder lately. After a fair bit of research, I'm starting to lean towards the polycraft boats. Tough like alloy, quiet and soft riding like fibreglass, cheaper than either and minimal maintenance. Do yourself a favour and check them out as
well. Plenty of good info on fishing sites such as ausfish, fishnet and sportfish, also polycraft.com.au. Now I've just got to save a bit more! See you in the bush and on the
water. Tim.

Had a look at polycraft in
Cairns & while they looked great my son up there told me a few horror stories. Seems they bend & you need a special trailer with pads that run the full length of the chines to support it. One apparently was bent like a banana, but check it out for yourself.
