My brother-in-law and I were discussing the 3.0L Turbo Diesel Patrol. He is NOT into 4x4ing but has a 3.0L in his car yard. He wants to know, (and so do I now!!!) is the 3.0L engine currently in the Patrol the same as the original 3.0L Patrol? Are they all direct injected? Or was the early one common rail? When was the 3.0L released? Was it 1999 or 2000??
Thanks in advance everyone!

Brian,Fortunately the current models are modified from the first 2000 models.
Anything in the 2000/ 2001 are is a great risk with numerous engine failures reported (mine failed at 118,000).
Nissan is replacing these engines under warranty, but will not say what the problem is.
It is well known that the 3+4 pistons melt due to oil supply failure in these models.
The later engines have additional oil sensors fitted and seem to have no problems.
If your mate has an early model in his yard he should get the buyer to take out an extended warranty to protect himself.
If you look back on this site engine failures are well reported.
Regards

Brian

Essentially the same motor (ZD30), but vastly modified since the first which was released here in the GUII Patrol June 2000. Prior to that the GUI had the 2.8 diesel The ZD30 motor as I understand it had been used in commercial vehicles (Renault) in Europe prior to its release in the Patrol world wide.

It was never Common Rail.

Crowie,

The first 3.0L were released in March 2000, not June.
I purchased mine in May 2000.

And it was not used in Renault vehicles prior to the Patrol...
The japan site says it was first used in Patrols in 2000 starting in Europe, it was released here shortly after and Nissan started using it in Renault vehicles after all that.. It is a NISSAN engine not a Renault one.

Nissan Motor and Nissan Diesel to supply Renault with Diesel engine

Nissan Motor, Nissan Diesel and Renault announced a long term agreement today for Nissan Motor and Nissan Diesel to supply diesel (ZD) engines to Renault and Renault VI beginning in spring of 2003. Under the agreement, production of the ZD engine will double as Renault and Renault VI purchase approximately 30,000 engines a year. These come in addition to the approximately 30,000 engines currently supplied to Nissan Motor.

Renault and Renault VI will utilize the engines in their range of light commercial vehicles (LCV). The ZD, 4-cylinder, 3 litter class Diesel engine with direct injection represents state-of-the art engine technology in term of noise, vibration and harshness suppression as well as fuel consumption reduction. The engine fitted on Renault products will be equipped with the common rail system and offer horsepower output with a range from 120 to 160 bhp. Nissan currently use the engine in vehicles including the Terrano, Elgrand and Safari/Patrol.

This long term agreement is consistent with the global cross support strategy pursued by Renault and Nissan.

Okay guys.

I bought a June 2000 build ZD30 engined Patrol which had been a demo since new. Presumed that was around the release date. Wasn't far out. Also 4X4 mag road tested the three Patrol motors in their July 2000 issue. New ZD30, revised (turbo) 4.2. diesel and the 4.5 petrol.

I knew it was a Nissan motor which was used in Renault commercials. Did say "I understand..etc."

Though some of the facts were slightly incorrect Brian's question was answered correctly and that's the most important thing.

Next answer will be (a) Has been modified (2) Never common rail. No room for error there!!!!

Safari Undergoes Minor Model Change
Now Featuring a NEO Di Direct-Injection Diesel Engine, Winner of the FY 1998 "Sho-Ene Taisho"(The Energy Conservation Prize)

Tokyo - Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. today announced the domestic release of the new Safari following the implementation of a minor model change.

Safari 2-door Hard-Top Super Spirit with 3.0-Liter Intercooled Direct Injection Turbo Diesel

Among the improvements made this time, the 2-door Hardtop is now fitted with the 3.0-liter ZD30DDTi direct-injection diesel engine that was awarded the FY 1998 Sho-Ene Taisho (The Energy Conservation Prize)*1. This outstanding engine enables the Safari to deliver greater power, consume less fuel and emit a lower level of carbon dioxide (CO2) than the previous model. It incorporates Nissan's unique Modulated Fire (M-Fire) combustion system that simultaneously reduces nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions and black smoke while operating with remarkable quietness.

*1This prize is given under a system sponsored by the Energy Conservation Center, Japan (ECCJ) to commend equipment and system for household and commercial use that demonstrate outstanding energy conservation performance.

All models come with a redesigned radiator grille and a body-colored bumper overrider which give the exterior a premium-quality look and a strong sense of stability. In addition, three attractive new colors have been added to the body color selection.

The interior has an enhanced image of superb quality and provides greater comfort, thanks to the changes made to the seat fabric design and seat shape, expanded use of handsome wood-grain panel trim and the addition of a longitudinal adjustment function to the head restraints. In the area of equipment features, a keyless remote control entry system is standard on all models. Moreover, standard appointments on the Granroad Limited include genuine leather-covered power seats for the driver and front passenger.

Improved safety performance has also been vigorously pursued, such as through the adoption of a one-touch driver's power window with a water-resistant switch system. This window incorporates a mechanism to prevent fingers and arms from being caught during one-touch operation by automatically reversing the direction and lowering the window.

All Safari models are now equipped with a rear limited slip differential (LSD) as a standard feature for improved driving performance.

The Safari lineup has also been further expanded by newly adding a 4-door Van model that is available in two trim grades.

Price Range and Sales Target
The new Safari is priced in a range from 3,102,000 yen to 4,152,000 yen.
Nissan projects a monthly sales volume of 150 units.
