Stop laughing, this is serious. Yes we do own a Lada and have found it to be a great little worker that will go almost anywhere.
We got it for almost nothing 4 years ago as a runabout for kids to learn on and they have done that. It was also a way of keeping them out of the Fronteria and as the Lada is not over loaded with a top speed, they have managed to keep out of trouble on the road.
The problem is it has started jumping out of 5th gear.
Any thoughts as to where in the gearbox to start looking for the cause.
Ok go ahead with all your Lada Jokes.
Vince

Thanks CJ. We use them for all our parts. Have found them to be great and orders arrive in 2 days at the most. I will give them a call and see if they have any advice. I should have thought about this before.

Hi Vince
I too used to own a Lada many years ago (very underated performance wise, but not super reliable). I "lost" 5th gear on my box, apparently caused by misalignment problems with the "donut" vibration dampener and causes
the nut to vibrate off the shaft. i would get it seen pronto before it costs you big $$$. I had to have the gearbox fixed as
well as the "donut" replaced. It was over 10 years ago so my memory is a bit hazy about the exact problem, but i certainly would get it seen to straight away. Probably best to find a Lada specialist as these vehicles have a lot of quirky mechanical items.
Cheers
Captain

Funnily enough Lada Nivas were rated in the top 10 used 4x4s in a recent 4WD Monthly!
I sold these new back in the late 80s, & the rubber uni joint was always a problem in regards to vibration, usually at around 80kmh. Was an inherent fault that they just couldnt seem to fix. I often wondered if fitting a Fiat rubber uni joint would have fixed it, as they are primarily based on Fiat, with heaps of 125 parts being the virtually same.
They are really quite a capable 4x4 with constant 4wd & centre diff lock.

The main shaft nut on the back of the gearbox loosens off and needs to be checked/tightened regularly so you don't stuff up 5th gear. Get it serviced by people who know Ladas and they'll always tighten
the nut up. Similar problem to mid 80's Pajeros I believe and probably others as
well.

common problem with the fiat 124 5 speed. it the large bolt on the output shaft.if you lucky and nothing is is wrong it might cost you just dropping the tailshaft and transfercase.
If drop out the box and rebuilt it at the same time you get change out of a grand. and second hand box will cost about $250 . Same time as stated get a new donut put in as
well be careful on alighment.
to go over board drop the calipers and drop in some brembo 4 pot calipers and a good master cyclinder. mind you the lada ones are a work of art just they feel spongey.

transfer has to be dropped.
its is easier to drop both at the same time then split the boxes apart.

If you really want to go over board with it a 2.0 ltr double over had cam EFI 1983 124 motor will nearly drop straight in.drop the computer in the glove box. Also move the sapre wheel to an outside location . as for engine mods you just got to modify sump for the front diff housing.
That will give you 3 times the horse power.
