I brought myself a 40 litre Engel yesterday. It's in the house keeping a few tinnies cool at about 3c at a setting of 1.5 on the dial. I take it this temp is controlled by a thermostat so no matter what the ambient temperature I can set it at 1.5 and expect it to maintain this temp. Am I thinking right ?

On an Engel SS80 Combo it has a digital readout. I can't remember exactly what temp correlated with which number (1-5) but we did achieve the same temp at each number regardless of anything else.
So yes you're right.

I remember 3 was -16 and turned all the way it would go down to -23 although the motor ran 100% of the time then. Temps might depend on the fridge though as the SS80 probably has a different motor to a 40L.

Thanks Utey. With such a low setting to acheive freezing there seems to be plently in reserve anyway.

I used to leave the SS80 on '2'. That froze everything in the freezer and everything in the Fridge was cold. '3' used to freeze the freezer and turn drinks in the fridge into slushy ice.

Enjoy your coldies.

Forgot to mention that on the SS80 the temp knob sets the temp in the freezer section. So '2' in the freezer would equate to '2' in your cabinet. So in the SS80s fridge section it is a bit warmer than the freezer (of course lol).

So '2' on yours would freeze things I'm guessing. Give or take from motor differences.

The internal temperature of the fridge will most definitely change with the ambient temperature. Firstly the insulation on the Engel is poor, and the thermostat is not temperature compensated. That is why Engel sell digital temperature gauges at twice the price of Jaycar and DSE.

They all seem to be pretty poor in insulation. I guess a portable fridge has to be a compromise between portability, size and efficiency.
I didn't know jaycar and DSE sold Engel gauges....Thanks for the reply Ozi

David,

Sorry mate, I'm missing the point of your last sentence - "That is why Engel sell digital temperature gauges at twice the price of Jaycar and DSE"

At any rate, the Jaycar ones are terrible - not many people I know have one that is still working correctly after 3 or 4 months...

The Jaycar temperature gauges are known for their quality and can safely say that hundreds of people here have them. Your statement is even dumber as Jaycar have a *large* range of temperature gauges suitable for use in fridges from simple ones to awesome ones that are wireless. All Jaycar gear carries a 12 month warranty and they happily replace anything that is faulty. Why do you think you get a warranty, so if the goods fail you can get a refund or replacement.
Engel temperature gauges are more than twice the price of similar units from Jaycar, DSE, Altronics etc. Jaycar are like Target stores, everything is quality tested prior to putting on their store shelves. Suggest you see a professional about your diarrhoea problem.

It's a good investment Ray!! On mine 1.5 on the dial keeps things nice and cool. On hot days I set it at 2.0 if its really hot in the vehicle otherwise 1.5 does the job. I have a "no brand" cover you can have as I bought a new engel bag a couple of weeks ago. There's no lookin back now. Cheers

Well the missus is impressed with the extra room in her fridge and I don't have to walk out of the study for a liquid refresher and no more bleep in around with ice when on the road. Rather a spur of the moment purchase, woke up in the morn and blurted out to the missus "I'm going down to buy a bloodly fridge" "Yes dear" I think she must have thought she was getting a new fridge for the kitchen :) God only knows what I dreamt about overnight.. I'll message you regarding the cover Leigh

Cheers

Maddy

i live in the tropics and use my englel at temps from 28 and up to 44 and the answer is YES. I have duct tape over control so it cant get moved. I use a digital temp read out and the thermostat keeps the fridge at a very even temp.

There was a test by ADI that had most of fridges and the engel temp varied the least with changes of ambient so despite what some people think about the insulation, it does the job very nicely.

mad dog, the control is a thermostat and should control at that setting (temperature) most of the time....but

there could be times ie very hot conditions where it may fluctuate a little ...depending on where you actually measure the inside temp....and
could over shoot on cool nights afetr a hot day when temperature inside actually gets lower than set point...and ....nah thats enough to tell you the thermostat is only a "guide" to actual temp

Well I'm happy, we had 36c here today. I left the control where it was and the temp still hovered around 3c so it appears I wont have to move the control much at all and the fridge is unclothed at this stage.
