Hello All Oz exploroz and visitors (me, still???)

I am tossing up between petrol and deisel (Hilux?). I currently have a 94 lux 2.8Dsl Excab with 235k and showing most of them mechanically so I am looking to move on. But, want to rebuild to be strong for turbo fit, then clutch, brakes, etc, etc . 2nd BUT
Considering 1 or 2 yr old replacement model.
The petrol has merit, less at the pump and fewer services. The deisel has better economy on the road but more servicing. As you all are aware, SO
If I buy a 3.0D extracab, preffered (not a factory turbo option) I will get it turbo'd, + dollars for Dsl and Tbo, but great fuel economy. Good set up, I like it
Petrol has merit, ready power, less servicing costs and a bit cheaper( most places) at the pump.

Sadly, 80% home area and 20% away on hols, so the xcab will stay around home for most of the time. For the few times I will travel to remote inland or desert area fuel spots, carrying a few fuel drums seems OK. Travelling and 4WD in quiet areas is what i seek, so a capable vehicle is required.

I have given 6cl consideration, oversize for myself, but not out of the equation if all meets my self interest.
Some of you have the ultimate set up, and some are envious

All replies, good, bad, funny (or weird, on this forum?) are valued

Thanks
Andy
PS Yesterday I saw a EO hilux dcab on fairfrord rd Padstow sth bnd, ..............WHE 1.. GiDDAy

Hi Wisey,
After having owned a 3 Litre for a couple of years I would get the 2.7 or buy the factory turbo, they go well.
The 3 litre non turbo is very under powered especially with 31 inch tires and a tall canopy as I have. Fuel consumption is not to flash either, due mostly to the tires and canopy.
I do my own servicing every 5000 k's, so I save money there. If you were paying for serviing I believe the petrol would be the way to go.

Fuel difference is substantial between 2.7P & diesel from my experience.
Followed one thru Simpson & it used 60% more than my 2.5td Triton.
Have heard the 3.0l HiLux is a bit thirsty & underpowered, why not have a look
at the Rodeo & 2.8tdi Triton.
Triton has strong diffs & gearbox is upgraded over older models like mine which has dome 240,000 kms. It goes better than ever & on a recent 10,000km trip to FNQ used no oil or water & didnt touch a spanner or screwdriver.
Careful driving gave 12km/l & higher speeds 10-11kml & offroad doesnt make much diff to a diesel fuel wise.
Still has original brakes front & rear but rear about due for shoes.
Front end, apart from shocks has had very little attention & still OK & torsion bars can be adjusted to suit you needs.

60% more is a lot, load?, tyres? pace?, etc,etc but for the few times that a trip like that comes around, . I still see merit in the petrol with fewer costs over a number of yrs. This type of trip is where the deisel can really shine as you have expeirenced.
Thanks for your suggestions re Triton, you have some strong points, never been in one so don't know what I'm missing. I think I can get about the same from a Lux, although purchase price is the difference.

Wisey
