We have an offroad camper van with a wind up roof and slide out beds and are considering whether some type of small airconditioner could possibly be fitted. Not permanently but fitted temporarily into place if required. We will have a access to a 2000 watt generator or mains power when in civilisation. The genset will obviously limit the aircon to around 1/2 to 3/4 HP I guess which would be ample for a small camper. The lighter and smaller the better! Question is, just where and how to attach it? Thought about one of those aircons that sit inside with an external breather /exhaust hose to the outside? Would be grateful for ANY ideas..

Have you done a search of the archives . . .

I'm sure its been discussed previously.

Anyway . . . Yes folks have done it to these vans.

Some have fitted a small roof system, one or two have fitted the cupboard ones down low (seat level), but the ones I have heard most about in these vans , is the portable ones you describe with the outside vent.

That way its not attached to anything , and can be moved around. Also help with resale later I think (no messy holes).

I'm pretty sure it has been discussed here as well. I had a windup with a split system at one stage.

Thanks too for your help Ray, Wolfie and pjd..................
I did find an archive on subject and think that I will go for a smallish portable aircon (not evaporative) . Simplex make one that Choice Mag recommends. Cost around $1000 . Simple and portable and runs off a 2000 watt gen set if required. Choice maintained that their tests that portables are not as efficient as RAC's or splits but for the right application suit the purpose. Interesting Link too, thanks Wolfie..........................
