Any one know if the 1983 2H Diesel has hydraulic or solid lifters. Have read somewhere on the forum that they are hard on the faces where they contact the valve. The vehicle has done 243,000 Ks and at the moment they are very quite, but would appreciate the knowledge and the adjustment tollerances should some one know. (In the 70,000 ks that I have had it they have never been adjusted). Thanks in advance.

Pesty,
If the lifters are quite at the moment and the engine runs perfect, why do the tappets ? I would imagine that if there was a loose tappet it would be making a racket. What sort of consumption do you get around town ? My beast is consistantly consistant with 15 lts 100, but it is aftermarket Turbo and that may account for the high useage.

As the valves and seats wear the valves move into the head and so close up the clearence gap which makes the engine quiet for a while but overrides the valve so gases can pass through even when valve shut and so soon burns out the valve/seat which then means a head rebuild so take your pick, head rebuild or tappets, if its not too late!!
15 litre per hundred is normal i average 15-16 without turbo.
