Don't know how young or old your car is but I recon pre-trip inspections are a waste of money.

I say get under it and have a look over things with fine tooth comb. You'll spend more time on it than a bloke you've just met. If you find any specific probs or have any, then let a mechanic look at.

If your car has been serviced regularly and oils changed etc as they should, then you can only check the obvious things like shocks, tyres, brakes, oil leaks and oil levels etc. what else would a mechanic do? no offence to you mechanics out there.

I just don't see the point is spending more money. Of course, some of us wouldn't feel confident in doing their own checks, and that's fair enough. Just trying to save you some money mate.

Others will disagree I guess.

If your a gun on mechanic's the above reply is ok , but even though I am a mechanic by trade , I still take my car to a mates workshop , as to put it up on a hoist. It's amazing , how easier it is to find a issue when the car is in the air.

Don't get me wrong , if you wanted to save money and are confident in your mechanic ability . Then the DIY is a great way to go also.

But remember this , Murphy's Law will get you every time.

Yep, I have a mechanic that i take mine to to when I want to check the EFI mixture at idle (gas analyser). If I have a big trip planned I ask if he would mind putting it on the hoist and giving it the once over. Another set of eyes, that are used to seeing faults, and the hoist allowing the car to be well inspected, means we usually find something that needs a tidy up.

Yep - I agree with the hoist notion.

Getting your head up in there with proper light and viewing angles lets you comfortably pick up on things you will never see lying on the ground. I also usually stuff my pockets full of cable ties and go around strapping anything down that looks as though it could rattle....

Andy, Give Derek a ring at Mansfield Motors on Newnham Rd Mansfield. He looks after my 4x4 and is very through, but not cheap. Phone no 33435722.
Cheers John

I agree with the hoist notion as well. That's what I meant by getting under it. Should have explained that better!
