Anyone had trouble with a 'cracking sound' from their dash when travelling off road on rough stuff.?
I have pin pointed
mine to be just near the 'NATS' light on the dash. It happens travelling over corrugated surfaces and it sounds like someone is tapping something solid against the window.
Could the dash be loose? does anyone know if there is a securing point near the NATS light location that could have come loose?
I can actually replicate the noise just by pressing on the area, standing still!
Any clues?
I will bring it to the attention of my Nissan man next service but would like to know if anyone has experienced anything similar in a GU dash.
cheers

Don't know if it's similar, but I had a cracking noise in my 1981 MQ that turnded out to be a cracked A-pillar. The two ends of steel were moving over each other on rough roads, and making a cracking noise. Fixed it by MIG welding the crack once I found it.

Do you have a Passenger Airbag? Numerous reports of rattles from this area. I've had a new airbag module and the second one repacked. Weight of bag can also loosen dash mounting bolt directly in front of it (beneath visible plastic cover at top front of dash) so check it for tightness first.

I have a bit of a rattle under the dash of
mine but it seems to have lessened a bit since I fitted a bracket onto the round cross member behind the passengers side dash (to hold a lcd screen) so I think it must be related to something touching this cross member

Gday Andrew,
Using a smal flat blade screw driver gently remove NATS light assembly, behind is dash mounting bolt (10mm) . Remove bolt find suitable washer to fit it and refit it. Bolt some times bottoms out and doesnt hold dash tight enough, give this a try.

sounds like you know something about it? when you say " gently remove NATS light assembly" do you mean from the top of the dash? I presume the bolt your talking about is undernieth the light?
sounds like your on the money but could you just be a little more descriptive.
cheers

I checked out the bolt you refer to. It appears tight to me. Couldn't get it any tighter.
The noise comes from a spot immediately left of the NATS lights (about 2 inches away)
Stuffed if I know.

Andrew,
I have a 2003 GU and this problem occurred in October this year while travelling over corrugations in the Innaminka Regional Reserve. It sounded like a bolt smashing against something. I thought something had come lose under the car at first before realising it was comming from the back of the dash somewhere. I kept driving and it stopped after a few minutes and hasn't returned, even while travelling over very rough roads on the rest of the trip. I asked the dealer at the next service to have a look. They said they couldn't find anything (That is if they did look). Nothing appears to have come undone as nothing has fallen though onto the floor (Yet). Good luck with the above advice, can you let me know if it works as I will get the dealer to have a better look next time.
Cheers
