G'day all,
I am trying to clear up once and for all, the need to replace big end crank bearings on my '91 80 series turbo diesel every 100,000km. I understand some members advise to replace big end bearings to be safe, but what I want to clear up is the fact that Toyota used bearings of a poor quality in some 1HD-T engines and by replacing them with new ones of a better grade, shouldn't they last as long as the engines life?, or is there something I am missing about the crank causing premature wear on new bearings needing them replaced much earlier than say the equivalant 1HZ engine. I hope with all the wisdom out there, I can clear this up for myself.
Mark.

The crank is the issues not the bearings , I wouldnt bother touching it unless i had to. if it starts to knock , I would change crank and bearings

What seams to be the issue with the crank? In my experience if you here knocking from big ends it’s to late, the damage would of already been done to the crank.

From what i remember , the had issues with end loaf in the crank shaft, this cause's the crank to eventualy snap , also use to chew out bearings.
Has something to do with 2 soft a material

Hi Mark
If the bearings have been replaced then all should be
well as the bearings were not hardened correctly and the harden started to break away. I had a 92TD and had the bearings replaced at 80000, the vehicle was fine 100000 later when sold

Sorry Stitch, but im taking the third option. I personally know a guy who has a 91 hdt and he had the bearings checked at 300,000kms, and they werte stuffed. They were ACL brand so were not originals, probably done at 200,000.
Other than this problem, the motors are beauties, so budget $400 extra every 100,000kms to replace them with the belt and u will not be spending 12k on a new motor.
Its as easy as that. I have heard causes ranging from the type of oil ran over here not having enough calcium in it to oil pressure problems to turbo resonance problems that are causing the delamination of the shells, but it isnt a once off fix.
The oil to run is Castrol CJX to get calcium at the recommended dosage...change at 5000km intervals and dont rev motor over 3500

Thanks for all the replies, fellas. The bearings were done about 40,000 km ago, before I purchased this vehicle. Any ideas on the cost of replacing the bearings, and which brands are best to use ?? It looks like I will change them every 100,000km just to be safe.
